what fluids? [Merged 6-7]

I'm about to do a complete fluid flush on my entire car. I'm gonna run mobile 1 motor oil of course. But what about coolant? And more importantly, what about Tranny fluid, i read somewhere that BGsyncroshift is for FWD only, but not sure about that, and what kinda oil and what weight oil do you use for Transfer case and differentials.

I mostly agree with RRE, except I use Pennzoil Synchromesh instead of BG. It's the same as GM Synchromesh, just a different bottle and $2/quart cheaper.

The best coolant is the one on sale. Don't get hoodwinked by the "new" pre-mixed crap unless you just don't want to stop by the grocery store for a bottle of distilled water to mix your own. Run 30% antifreeze in warm weather, 50% in _really_ cold weather.

rear diff - 75W-90

tranny I think uses anything from 75W-90 to 80W-90.

transfer case - 75W-90

You should be able to see the weights but reading the owners manual for the car, there is a table in the back.

Or go into your local autostore or bookstore (Barnes and Nobles) and grab the Haynes manual and look it up

My opinion:

Motor-Castrol 5-30 synthetic
Transmission-GM syncromesh
Transfer case-Mobile-1 synthetic gear lube 75-90(I believe)
Rear differential-Redline heavy duty shook proof gear oil
Coolant-What ever is on sale

And if you are doing a complete system flush don't forget your brakes, clutch and power steering, they also need flushed once in a while.

My 1990 GSX is at about 60,000 miles and I am going to change all the fluids. I need some advice thought on what fluids are he best and have the best effects. Transmision Fluid? Transfer Case Fluid? Rear Diff Fluid? Coolant? and for the hell of it, i have been useing mobile 1 full synthetic 5w30 oil, but as wondering anyone has any other suggestions and why? Thanx for all your time and help!

Well, search. Otherwise, Pennzoil Synchromesh, Redline MTL, any brand-name antifreeze that's green, and I don't think synthetic oil is of enough use in street engines to pay the extra for.

You will be lambasted with opinions on all these, of course.

I was planning on changing the fluids in the tranny, transfer case & rear diff. I was wondering what weight fluid i should buy. Redline fluid is real easy for me to get and i can get a real good deal on it. Is this a good gear oil, i heard that BG is one of the best for DSM's. What should i go with?

I went with BG Syncroshift in my tranny, Amsoil gear lube in the xfer case, and Lucal gear oil in the diff, they definately all improved in performance. Shifted and ran a little smoother than normal

I went with BG Syncroshift/GM Synchromesh (I was told they are virtually the same, the GM is MUCH more expensive) and for the transfer case and rear I went Mobil 1 Synthetic 75w90.

As strong a proponent as I am for Synchromesh, if you have a line on Redline and don't mind the expense, use it for the transfer case and the rear end. But I don't think they have a transmission fluid that'll work as well in a DSM as the Synchromesh.

Ive heard good things about using the Redline shockproof in the tranny. Im going to give it a try when a change the clutch in a couple weeks.

Well i used Pennzoil in the tranny and transfer case, but still don't know what to use in the rear end??? I used prestone green coolant with distilled water, and mobile 1 full sythetic oil.

I've gone back and forth between Mobil 75-90 and Redline MTF since my 98 was new and ended up (at 100k miles, granted) greatly preferring heavy Valvoline semi-syn over both of them.

I always found the Mobil hard to shift and the Redline the noisiest, notchiest and weakest bear-whiz imaginable. In cold weather I could barely get to work with the Mobil, and the gear overrun from the MFT juice made it feel like I had water in the case.

With the Valvoline stuff (like 90-140 or something) the car shifts better than that Redline MTF pee ever did, yet runs quieter than the good ole Mobil stock weight. Best of both worlds.

I've searched and searched. And every where i got all i see is debates but no SOLID answer.

I'm building my car from the ground up. Its taking its first drive this weekend.
I need:

Oil
Brake Fluid
Spark plugs
Tranny Fluid
and
Fluid for the rear differential

I'm more that willing to go to advance, auto zone, bap geon, pep boys or where ever as long as i can drive an pick it up. just help me out.

I'm sure this will turn into a debate but in case it does can yall atleast tell me why you prefer a particualr item.

Thanks
