So I want to try making a UICP or LICP for an evo/dsm out of stainless. My practice with stainless is VERY limited. So that being said, any tips/tricks etc?
I don't have the pulse feature so I know it's going to be tricky. Should I pulse with my foot?
Filler or no filler? (no filler going to hold enough pressure?)
Will not back purging have any affect on welding intercooler pipes (strength or hurt airflow?)
2% lanthanted 3/32 work well for 16g stainless?

No need to pulse, here's how i do it..

Set the amperage about 10-15% lower than the 1 amp per .001 thickness rule, stathot for just a second then cool the pedal down .

Add filler just at the begiing and then use a circular motion to autogenous weld for about 3/4an inch, then let cool till it's not red.... start again away from where you just welded.. Add more filler when you seeundercut start to develope

So only add filler when it first puddles then no filler. Any advantage to autogenous vs using filler?

If you don't backpurge the weld will be sugared on the inside, which can create turbulance. Filler yes. 50-65 amps. I sanitary weld SS everyday at work. I work at a cheese factory.

Well I like cheese :)

When welding SS, if you compare back purge to non back purging does it weld the same?
Will it have turblance or sugaring if you used no filler?

And will using filler always be stronger weld than no filler?

Personally, I would trust autogenous welding for IC pipes. Fitment must be 100% tight and perfect. And you'll need to either backpurge or use Solar Flux type-B. You probably saw my thread on autogenous welding over on WW; it seems that as long as you have proper penetration, there's no strength issue with autogenous welding on low stressed applications. Remember that radiator hose that you bought from me years ago? That was autogenous welded.

2% lanthanted 3/32" is fine. SS loves gas coverage. Consider picking up an oversized gas lens.

yes filler if possible as it is alot stronger then just fusing the 2 metals together, if your butt welding then chamfer the welding edges first to get full pen then use filler to fill it in for stronger welds and it also looks better to, and dont lay the weld on top so wait for it to pool first

If you chamfer the pipe then you will need to add filler. If you have very tight fit up then you don't need filler material. Any reinforcement on the inside or outside of the pipe will be extra and will not affect the structural integrity of the pipe and too much can be an issue (which is why there is max reinforcement allowed in welding codes). The strength of the pipe or joint is determined by the smallest cross sectional area of the member.

That is a horrible horrible wisconsin steryeotype.Like we have all worked at cheese factories or love cheese.AS IF RIGHT.

^ Ohh that was a joke upon myself.I have worked at one, and do love cheese..Nothing like some cheese on cheese action.
