Before I started building railroads i was a welder for 5 years. The biggest rule to go by for all good welders is to make sure you prep the metal well.No rust no paint no oil.If you are using a wire feed mig make sure you are using the right gauge size of wire for the thickness of metal you are welding.Practice practice practice try all angles because most of the time youll never be welding anything flat or vertical when it comes to a car you almost have to be a contortionist at times. And the gas you are asking about is called argon if you are not welding flux core you will need the argon as your shield. As for splatter its hard to get rid of but they make a spray you can add to the piece you are welding and it will not effect your weld, the splatter will not harden and wipe right off.If you decide on making your own in/ex manifolds or make a roll cage,Forget the mig and take some classes to learn how to tig weld its not that hard to pick up but its very nice to learn.Once you try to mig weld aluminum or stainless you will wish you had a tig.If you have any questions pm me im F.A.A certified to tig aluminum.
