I have a few dumb questions that I will be posting here as I put together my trans. Figure I would rather not doubt myself and maybe the next guy in the future could use this information.

1st question: How does one usually go about in cleaning out this "filter?" It doesn't want to come off and I doubt they still make it so I don't want to wreck anything. It is on the posts fairly well. I even tried making it really cold since aluminum will shrink more than the metal but that didn't really work. If you pry it'll just bend. Brake clean and air perhaps? Trans had around 150k so it's fairly full.

2nd question: When you are checking clearances, for the front output shaft would the solder go on the bottom race or the top one? In this picture the solder would be placed where marked green. In the manual I cannot determine if it is the top or bottom race. If it even matters...

3rd question: Is it preferred to check clearances with the old shims removed or should they be stuck back and check clearances. I suppose with them removed you get a better idea what ONE shim size you need instead of stacking them.

4th question. Once you determine what size shims needed for front diff and output shaft. Can you move onto figuring what shims needed for the center diff, intermediate shaft, and input shaft. Or do you have to get the right shims for the bottom section have it installed and torqued down before you move onto the last 3. If that makes sense. I do not think you would have to since the case will be torqued down and all the shims do is pre load the bearings so its not like the case is being moved in any shape or form.

5th question: The solder size used for front diff is .062" and 3/32" for the output shaft. Then once I move onto the mid section. 3/32" will be used on the center diff. And then .062" solder will be used on the input and intermediate shaft.

Solder on the race that has the shim. Do not use shims during the measuring process. I like to do each race separately. Dont use anything too thick and it needs to be soft. I spin the shafts a few times too. I want to make sure things are set. This is especially true on the last bearing case as it can flex.
