Using Wheel Spacers on Road Courses? Do a Paper Test

James Clay (if you're into road racing you've likely heard his name) was nice enough to post a video on how to do a simple test on wheel spacers to ensure they fit properly before you take your car out to the road course - or even the street. This will help prevent wheel stud failures, which Clay's race team found were due to improper wheel spacer seating. Be sure to watch the video:

I used to run them when it was more a street car but i did not have the budget for the right wheels in my ET at that point but now i do and have them I wont use wheel spacers in racing, ideally never if you can help it as they tend to be a weak point and if you do get them, use hub centric ones and also try opt for 7075 vs 6061 material! as its much stronger!!! last ones i got were imported from the USA from 1320 wheel spacers link here >>>> http://1320performance.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=318

Uhhhh, what? That makes zero. Zero sense. 1. That's why you have 5 lugs and torque them to 80ft lbs.

2. When the hub, rotor and wheel heat up that's also gonna change.

Fear porn. To date I don't really know anybody that has broken a wheel off that was properly setup and torqued. A piece of paper is .002", that's cool for basically any engine spec...a wheel? Please.

James Clay has been road racing for quite a while, and is highly respected in the touring car world. I seriously doubt he's simply trying to spread fear with this, but I suppose anything's possible.

We don't have a lot of DSMers who run at road courses, but I shared it here anyway for the few that do. Take it for whatever it's worth. Ideally, you'd use wheels that are sized appropriately instead of using spacers, but spacers are actually used in road racing quite a bit, even in popular racing series. They open up the door to being able to use a wider range of wheel options, which is great when you need to find spare wheels after an off-track excursion. Again, take it for what it's worth or just skip the info. Thought some might find it useful.
