1G Upgrade evo 16g to downfiring 20g comp housing and wheel. Possible? Worth it?

What do you guys think?

There's so many damn 20g options out there that it can be hard to find good info on them. Back in the day I had a sleeper 16g or "bastard 20g" and it was great but I'm even more curious about trying the downflow compressor housing 🤔. Experiences? Opinions? Thanks

That particular compressor housing does nothing except require a 3" (or larger) intake pipe and make it about impossible to affix an internal actuator to the cover.

The Big 16G (Evo III), 18G, and 20G wheels all have the same exducer...so they're just the same series of wheel with a larger inducer spec, meaning their trim calculations are different. That said, if you're looking to upgrade you'd generally want to shoot for the wheel with the compressor map that suits your desired pressure ratio. Where that gets complicated is potentially running out of turbine flow at a given pressure on whatever type of fuel you're running. So a 20G on an unclipped TD05H turbine is going to yield much more of a noticeable power increase over a 16G if you're running race fuel or ethanol compared to pump gas....otherwise the 16G is likely to "feel" faster due to it's quicker response.

Thanks for the great info as always Justin. I searched the forum using the search function along with Google but I couldn't find much info at all (it seems like the search function would yield 10 pages of results back in 09)

Also, while I've got you here, this is the comp wheel on the turbo now with your name on it haha. Hell, it may already be a upgraded wheel I have no idea.

One thing I DO know, is that this thing hits 28-30psi on wastegate pressure and one time I forgot to hook the wastegate vacuum line up, and it hit 39psi and held it till I let off around 6k 🧐🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I tried that exact housing and wheel on my evo 3 16g. I fabbed up a wg actuator bracket for a cheap actuator. Required drilling another hole in the housing to relocate it. Had to trim a small amount off the fan for clearance. Like already stated, its a bit laggier. I never really got to play with it too much before starting my awd swap so I can't say much about it other then the torque hit of the 16g was gone. It felt like it had more potential up top but then again my 16g tune was never too crazy either .. 20lbs on 91.

Edit: could've been 25lbs on 91 ... haven't driven it in months now and I can't remember.

Bring this back from the dead. I picked up a E3 16G but don't have a j-Pipe. I'm looking to swap the comp cover for a down firing one so I can hook it up to my FMIC. Is a 20G cover a direct fit for a 16G? I don't want to swap the comp wheel. I just want a down firing cover. Is that do-able?

I've seen down-firing 16G compressor covers on MAMBA Turbo and Kinugawa USA.
