Turbo spooling?

Alright, this may be a ridiculously stupid question, or it might not be im not sure.

Are you supposed to be able to hear your turbo spool? Because ive been in 2 other talons aside from mine, and i could hear the turbo spooling, but in my car, i cant here it at all. My boost gauge is reading 12 psi, but i cant here my turbo at all.

I went to the track 2 days ago and my car did a 17.5 in the 1/4 mile. Im pretty sure it wasnt driver error as my RT was .138 and my 60' was 2.2 seconds.

So basically, my question is, is my turbo pooched, or am I looking at something else?

this might be a dumb question but is your car automatic? cause i know on auto's that you can't hear the spooling until you let off the gas, and at a track you're full throttle the whole way.

Boost gauges don't lie. If you're making 12psi, the turbo is doing it's job.


P.S.- Don't vent your blow off valve.

I would assume its a cracked wastegate area and an exhaust leak. Sure it doesn't pull very hard because the exhaust isn't getting to the turbine, its going around it.
Pull off that 02 housing and shove a flashlight down there.

Where is that blue hose going?
Are you still running your BCS and all the vacuum lines under there?

Definitely looks like a 14b to me. Doesn't matter if you're building boost or not if there is a huge boost leak then the car will run super rich and the turbo will throw out super hot air just to make the pressure you are asking about it. It can mean HUGE losses in power.

So what your saying is that his turbo could be making 12 lbs of boost but its all hot air from the turbo overworking because of the leak, which is causing his car to lose power?

Potentially, though that would be a fairly extreme situation at 12psi. Still a large boost leak wouldn't effect normal driving hugely because of closed loop compensation but would cause huge issues at wot with a rich mixture to the point where the car could be so far out of an optimal AFR that it just doesn't have any power and then knocks from the overly rich condition causing it to pull timing which would make even more of an issue. Having pre-turbo exhaust leaks will also slow spool down enough that there would be a noticeable loss in performance. It could also explain not hearing the turbo since the turbo could easily not be spinning quickly until the motor is already making significant noise.

Yeah under normal driving conditions the car seems fine, under WOT the cars seems really weak. I can faintly here the turbo once it says im at 12 pounds, and as soon as i shift, i loose all power, and have to begin building boost from scratch, somtimes the car actually goes back to vaccum.

Do the seafoam thing to check for exhaust leaks before the turbo. let me know how that turns out, so I can do it to mine.

Ok, so i only have 2 bolts in for my heat sheild, would not having one of the bolts cause a leak? Or do the bolts even go into the manifold its self?

No it wouldn't. Look for cracks, black smut from exhaust.

Ok, so i took off the heat sheild, and didnt notice any visual cracks, however, I noticed that im missing a nut on the manifold. Would not having a nut on the manifold cause an exhaust leak?

It can cause a leak yes. Not a huge one but one that could affect your turbo spooling up. Just get another bolt and put it in there maybe while you are there replace the gasket. It wouldn't hurt to do that to see if that helps your exhaust leak too

I have an EVOIII exhaust mani coming at the end of the month with a new gasket, so ill replace the gasket then, when i had the heat shield off, the parts of the gasket i could see looked it pretty bad shape, so im pretty sure thats part of my problem.
