Alright, this may be a ridiculously stupid question, or it might not be im not sure.

Are you supposed to be able to hear your turbo spool? Because ive been in 2 other talons aside from mine, and i could hear the turbo spooling, but in my car, i cant here it at all. My boost gauge is reading 12 psi, but i cant here my turbo at all.

I went to the track 2 days ago and my car did a 17.5 in the 1/4 mile. Im pretty sure it wasnt driver error as my RT was .138 and my 60' was 2.2 seconds.

So basically, my question is, is my turbo pooched, or am I looking at something else?

do you still have the silencer on? i have an intake pipe and open dp and i can hear mine pretty good at even 9-10psi.

that 17.5 time sounds like your turbo could be going out. check for boost leaks, and check the line that goes to your wastegate for cracks or any kind of leaks.

usually if your turbo is going out, it would sound louder, at least my friends 14b did. his also made a whistling sound under spool.

they probably run o2 housing dump.

They were stock

I have a Dejon intake, im building a boost leak tester here pretty soon, so ill get on that, and ill check that, and im planning on removing emissions, and replacing all vaccum lines soon.

I can hear mine at 3psi LOL, Not sure why you are concerned although it does sound pretty

Its not the sound im really concerned about. Its the fact that on those two other cars i could here the turbo, and they pulled A LOT harder than mine does. And those cars were bone stock, where as my car has an intake, exauhst, EVO III O2 housing, and an MBC. Thats why im concerned, 17.5 is ridiculous.

I totally agree with you. Maybe you have a bad bad boost leak somewhere?? Have you done a test?

Havent been able to get my hands on the materials to build one. Ill get on that right away here.

does your boost build normally on the gauge? try out someone else's ECU, maybe your car is in limp mode.

Boost starts building around 3500 and builds to 12, and around 6000 it drops to 10, and around 6200 it feels like it just falls on its face. My SOHC saturn pulls harder around there.

My buddy has a talon with a wrecked rear end he's selling me, so ill check the ECU thing pretty soon.

Check for shaft play, any smoke coming out of your exhaust? FYI, reaction time has no effect on quarter mile time.

Ill check for shaft play tomorrow at work, far to cold out side right now LOL. And my car burns a little oil, nothing excessive. The other two talons smoked and burned a whole lot worse than mine does, and they pulled twice as hard.

And i know the rt and what not dont effect the 1/4 mile time, but i know how to drive, it was just to state it was definatley not driver error.

If you're building boost via boost-guage, then you're building boost. A boost-leak wouldn't mask the sound of spool; especially since you're still making 12psi. With a boost-leak, you're shoving nothing but hot air into your motor; because your MBC will still try and make the set boost by over-spinning the hell out of your turbo. Which will rob you of tons of power and cause knock/ignition retard. Hence your time.

As far as now spool sound, maybe your air-filter is clogged. Sounds elementary, but we all miss things and make mistakes. In the end, you just need to go out and work on your car.

I must have a boost leak then. Ill have to get on that. Thanks a lot.

And i just cleaned my filter, LOL. Its not the sound im worried about, i could care less about that, its just my previous experiences with other DSM's and being able to hear their turbo's and them pulling a lot harder than mine.

What turbo do you have? Mine did the same thing. The boost also built very slow. I had a bunch of exhaust leaks before the turbo. Cracked manifold, leaking gasket.

No problem. And Mork is right, if you're still using the stock air-can, it'll be quite. But with your mods, I doubt it. Plus you said you have a Dejon. I know you don't care about the noise, but you should be hearing it. Get to work!

Thats a picture of my engine bay with my intake setup. BTW, BOV is currently reciculated now. Its a K&N, and i bought the car exactly like that picture is. Im still trying to sort out a lot of kinks, as you can tell. I got the pipe welded with a recirc tube on it (Weld isnt leaking im 100% positive on that) And the filter is clean now.

What would be the best way to go about checking for exhaust leaks? Would a BLT find out if i had any or is there another specific way of finding them?

Take off your exhaust heat shields and buy a can of seafoam then take the vacuum line off of the P port of the throttle body and suck some of the fluid out of the can. The car will try to die and if it does just turn it back on again, after a little bit it will start to make a thick white smoke that will literally be thick enough to hide your house from the neighbors, see if any of it comes out from the exhaust manifold area, if it does then you have an exhaust leak.

Search "seafoam" if you need more help or you want a better understanding of what it does. It is a process that should become a part of your regular maintenance.

but still, even if he has exhaust leaks before the turbo he is still building full boost by 3500RPM. Like what was stated about the boost leaks. if your building boost then your building boost. 17.5 1/4 mile is rediculous. are you auto or manual? and it doesnt look like you have a stock turbo...maybe your turbo doesnt make as much noise because its not spooling as fast to make the 12 lbs compared to maybe a smaller turbo that would have to work harder.

It says he doesn't start building boost until 3500 and full boost at like 6000.

Definitely looks like a 14b to me. Doesn't matter if you're building boost or not if there is a huge boost leak then the car will run super rich and the turbo will throw out super hot air just to make the pressure you are asking about it. It can mean HUGE losses in power.

Housing says TD05H so i dunno? Having a 14b would pretty cool LOL didnt know that.

Car is a 5 speed, and 17.5 seconds in the quarter mile, our local track runs american standards.
