2G TSi AWD / GSX fuel pump hanger repair/replacement

So my fuel pump and hanger is kinda bad.

Does anyone make a hanger for the AWD cars or are the only options dealer or junk yard? I've only been able to find the FWD versions in the aftermarket. It looks like the OEM AWD pump/hanger runs $400-500 from the dealer (if they even have it)..

Is it possible to salvage a hanger/sending unit that looks this bad and just replace the pump?

I didn't get the chance to pull the driver's side pump but it's probably just as ugly.

you can also take a brass wire brush to the metal hanger piece and see if it is completely rusted thru, if not then take it out clean all metal and replace the pump and put back just make sure its super clean

and yea that is really bad i have also never seen one that bad but it is salvageable

I dont see what would stop you from plugging the one pump side and just running a single pump if thats what you are getting at.

No I was just saying that I was not aware they made just a single pump set-up, which I would like just to save on the price tag I would think. But yeah the way you mentioned works as well.

I would for sure clean the fuel tank by the looks of the hanger.

spend 10 bucks on some brass brushes or brass wire wheels and clean all metal then you wont have to replace the hanger

Ya there's a bunch of crap that fell in. We're planning on dropping the tank and flushing it out. Can you drop it without dropping the subframe? Just exhaust and drive shaft?

I was in a similar situation as you about a month ago (although mine wasnt as bad). I ended up cleaning mine up, getting a new gasket and a fuel feed line (along with pump, strainer, etc). I priced out a whole used assembly and it was about $200 on average. There were about 3 for sale in the DSM Classifieds FB Group. I want to say RIX Racing had one, no sure if it sold.

This assembly popped up on FB. Guy says he would take $200 plus shipping. Looks minty fresh.

Thats a good question, unfortunately I am not 100% certain and I cant locate the Mitsubishi part number to confirm. All the 2G AWD assemblies I've seen appear to be identical with the same white connection on top of the assembly.

All the 2g AWD factory fuel pump hangers are the same only FWD fuel pumps are different

You have to drop the subframe unfortunately. Just did mine. It’s actually not as hard or bad and you are probably imagining. There are pretty good YouTube videos and of course LOADs of info on here too.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to post a long overdue update. I decided to try cleaning up the hangers as it was pretty hard to come by a good condition used one and buying new seemed like a waste if I would be upgrading the pump down the line anyways.


First off here are some better quality initial pics from when I first pulled the hangers. They looked quite horrible:

First I tried some manual wire brushing, which got some of the major chunks of rust off but still looked pretty bad and couldn't really get into all the nooks and crannies:

Next I tried soaking them in white vinegar for about a week. Super cheap and did a decent job of getting most of the rust off.

But there was still some surface rust and the hangers started to flash rush shortly after taking them out and rinsing them off (even after spraying them down with WD 40):

Lastly, I tried some Rustoleum Rust Dissolver (the spray gel version). This stuff works amazingly. You can see the rust dissolving on contact and it's done in about 30 minutes. The best part is it leaves a rust inhibitor coating on all the surfaces for up to a year so you don't have to worry about flash rusting. (I threw some tools in to get cleaned up at the same time).

Then I just put a couple coats of paint on the tops and installed my new Walbro pump and new gaskets.

I would definitely recommend giving this a shot as most people's pumps probably don't look as bad as mine did and its getting pretty hard to find the AWD hangers nowdays. Definitely start with the Rustoleum Rust Dissolver or a similar product.
