Okay so here's the dealio people... I changed my oil in my transfer case because of a high pitch whine I had, the whine was speed related. Anyways when I drained it, I got about 2 oz.'s out of it, it was black and gunky:barf::barf::barf:. I felt inside the drain plug and I could feel a loose peice of metal stuck inside?.. I filled the transfer case back up with fresh oil and it started to leak the clean oil out, I was concerned so I drove it home and when I got home the leak had increased. I attached a pic of where it is leaking can somebody please help identify this please!!! and maybe the whining to?... oh and I have a good price on a new transaxle and case.. so I was thinking about just doing a swap because my sychros are getting worse everyday. Is swapping a tranny a pain in the ass or just time consuming?:beatentodeath:

From the picture it would appear to be coming from your clutch slave cylinder. The internal seal probably has a small tear in it and every time you push in the clutch a little bit of fluid is leaking past. not sure how much is coming out on each push but a leaking slave cylinder may also be causing you to think your synchro's are worn out or accentuating the problem since you may not be getting a full throw to release the clutch.

The leak is gear oil though wouldn't the slave cylinder be brake fluid? and the tranny oil isn't that dark it was changed recently. I swear its the transfer case... and that peice of metal inside of it.. any idea on that?

well if it for sure gear oil then you would most likely be looking at a leaking input seal which is what seals the inside of the transmission from the bell housing area. Is the whining at all times or does it go away in 4th gear? Also what color was the piece of metal? kind of gold? grey? or silver in color?

Input seal for sure, if it's whining that means you ran it low on oil and those gears are toast... time for the swap...

Make sure you start on a day when you feel happy :thumb:. And be prepared for it to turn into an angry day:notgood:
