Too much shaft play???

Heh heh... I said shaft play... Hey, I just bought a Big 16g that the guy said ran fine when he took it off, and that it had a little shaft play... I checked it out and I would also call it a small amount of shaft play, but I don't know if its too excessive... It moves slightly side to side and occasionally when i spin it and try to move it to one side a little it scrapes the housing slightly... I heard that when oil gets into it it keeps it in line better, and it only scrapes VERY slightly and only occasionally if I try to make it scrape... Is this horrible???
 
So would I if I had the money... :coy: I'm curious if it would do the job until I can afford a rebuild...
 
I think it will do the job, I recommend stock boost levels until you can afford one. Hitting boost often will increase the process of destroying your turbo.
 
i just bought a 50 trim from a guy on here, and he said it had regular shaft play that any turbo has with no oil in it......when i got it you could move it side to side and in and out a very small amount, however you could not hit the housing with the impellar........I asked the same question you are asking and everyone just told me to have it rebuilt.

but boy what a pain in the ass, i have to send it away to freakin texas and pay 275 plus shipping to and from, www.turbochargers.com......

Thats why there is no point of buying used turbos unless you know it is blown and you want to rebuilt it. A brandnew one is probably a few more hundred, but you know it works. If you bought a used turbo and thought it was alright then it turns out to be shit. You are going to spend the same amount of money as a brandnew turbo overall. Bottomline is don't go used unless you got some crazy amazing deal and have spare money for a rebuild.

Hmmmm.... Unbreakable... Sounds great!!! Just kidding. I'll keep it at around stock boost levels until I can get a rebuild... Does 14-15 psi sound like its pushing it?
 
Stock I think is 12 psi. Well really its up to you. Just remember if you have shaft play and spin the compressor over 100,000 rpm, something is going to scrap around and break. Just don't be a lead foot. Take it easy on the gas, drive it normally.

Well than in that case you need to save up a few hundred to build your turbo asap. Because you will be blowing it sooner than you think :D.
 
If there is shaft play, then the channel bearing is trashed. Whether it be from lack of oil and/or pressure or foreign material lodged in the bearing, it is now ruined and in need of a replacement.

I would not recommend installing the turbo if the compressor wheel blades are hitting the housing. It's condition is only going to retrogress. As it decays, you will begin to smell oil burning. You will find oil in your intake and compressor cover. You will begin to hear a whistle, which will soon turb to a loud whine - That is the sound of the wheel hitting the housing repeatedly. You will experience extremely slow spool and the turbo's flow rate will drop. And so on and so forth. Like I said, it only gets worse.

Most peple take blown turbos off their cars to fix them; not the other way around. Dont make the mistake of installing a blown one on your car and expecting anything beneficial to result. Have it rebuilt before you use it. :dsm:
 
My big 16g has alot of in and out shaft play
but no up and down whatsoever
its not scraping or sounding like a supercharger LOL
no boost leaks either
maybe im 1 in a million
but ive had a blown turbo b4
and when its blown u definately know it
for now id say thAt mine is ok
and it has about 30,000 on it
you'll know when your turbo is dying
you cant take off your intake pipe and check it everyday
(well i guess u could if u really wanted to)
 
trust me take it easy until you can have it rebuilt, i did the same thing thinking i could get away with some shaft play and not my e3 16g is destroyed. The fins are all bent up and there is tonnes of shaft play. And dont even get me started with the smoke. I would say save up and rebuild. I wish i did cause now i have to buy a new one :sneaky:
