how mcch is too much shaft play?

hey guys,
i just bought a b16g from a member here and it has a little more shaft play then i expected. it has side to side play of about 1.5mm.. it's not hitting the housing yet but it's pretty damn close. it also has about 1mm of up and down shaft play. oh yea, i also paid 450 shipped for it.

is that too much shaft play for the price?

According to a recent article in Turbo magazine (so take this as you see fit), there should be NO shaft play in/out, but that side-to-side play from what I remember is within spec. For $450, though, I'd think you are justified in expecting less play.

For a journal bearing turbo, yes there will be shaft play even on a new turbo! Thats just how journal bearings work. The thin slick of oil that the turbo glides on makes up the extra room. The in and out should be around 1mm, so I think all is good.
