That is my question. I have a 95 gst that I bought completely stock, so that I could work on it from the beginning and get to know these cars. The thing is, I have a chance at picking up a 95 gsx, lightly modified. I've been doing some research and everyone seems to say awd is the way to go, but that it takes more maintenance and will break down on you more often than fwd. (not really sure if that's true)
I dont have big plans, and I don't plan on going to the track or anything(although things could change down the line), I just want a DD with power to take on anything I find on the streets (400whp is my goal). Is the gsx REALLY that much better?
I'd like to hear from people who've owned both too. Any input would be great ;)

IMO the gsx is much better. Power transfer and handling are night and day over the fwd.
I bought my GSX new back in 95 and test drove the GST first then the GSX and there was no question which I was going to buy.

The only "extra maintenance" you would have to do is change the rear differential and T-case oil every year or so. Maybe change the rear axles if they're in bad shape. Break down more often? That's just nonsense cannon fodder from the "This DSM vs. That DSM" battles.

As for is AWD that much better? Yes. IMO the AWD is the best high power DSM platform for the street. A 400hp FWD car will do nothing but struggle for grip on street tires and will be no match for the STi's and Evo's that have the same power yet twice the ability to get the power to the ground.

I started out with a FWD back in '99. I owned it for a couple years, ended up selling it and moving on to an AWD. And I never looked back.

I don't find them more unreliable than a FWD either.

Well that settles it I guess, thanks for the info/opinions :thumb:
I'll jump on that gsx and sell the gst :)

Get both, I have em. My wife (for whatever reason) prefers the GS-T and well, men being smarter than women ;) I prefer the GSX. It's really all about your driving style and the terrain you're navigating. I'm actually going to post pics of both my rides up tonight cause i'm in the mood.

Real DSMs have power to all the wheels. The FWD replicas aren't even trying.

Every time you launch so hard your wipers come on it will make you giggle.

I'd love to keep both but I dont have the money or space for it. Plus it would give me some extra cash to work on the gsx.

Don't get me wrong I love my car, but I don't wanna feel like I made a mistake, then go through swapping over parts or trying to find a cheap gsx again (the one I'm looking at is willing to do $2k with only a broken side skirt and missing registration.)

I would definitely go GSX.. but they didn't make spyders in AWD. So I'm going to have rape a GSX to make mine AWD :)

It's all about driving style and what you will do with the car. All configurations are fun in my opinion. I road race all three FWD RWD and AWD. Keeps things interesting. It's less challenging racing an AWD somewhat because of the obvious advantages, however if you have to stick to one car and this is a good opportunity that won't put you out of money just to make a change then by all means the GSX is a very good, fun, and do it all car.

Hey hey hey!!!! thats an insult to us FWD guys LOL.

Calm down rot Wyler!..LOL jk

If you have AAA give them a call before you buy the vehicle or go straight to the DMV. I made an expensive mistake on my first DSM (1996 Mitsubishi GS-T) and bought it used and thought since the tile was free and clear it was good to go, went to register the dang on thing and it costs me about 1200 (can't remember the exact price) in past due fees, current fees, smog, etc... 2K might turn into 3.2K if you're not careful. Just a heads up not a deterrent

I've driven an auto GST, 5spd GST, auto GSX, and a 5 spd GSX

1-auto gsx
2-5 spd gst
3-5 spd gsx
4-auto gst

love the auto GSX. a little less maintenance than the 5 spds. i like the 5 spd gst a little more than the gsx just because it is less stuff to break and less weight. I'm not a strip guy. I just wanna post big numbers and tell people to suck it LOL

Hmm haven't thought about that actually. I'll check it out at the dmv first. Thanks for the heads up

I do like the fact that the gst is lighter, I noticed it when I went against a stock gsx. (got me off the line obviously, but I pulled on him after 2nd :D )
Plus everyone seems to not bother with fwd anymore, and just jump straight in to awd. So I do have an urge to stick with fwd as well.

the GSX is rated 20mpg combined
GST is rated 24mpg combined

GS (N/A) is rated...
drum roll

23 mpg combined. go figure

It's just something to consider with gas prices climbing with no cap in sight. I'd say get the two, keep one stock for dd and mod the hell out of the AWD for weekend fun.

Which GS are we talking about? Because my Spyder GS gets around 15 :( LOL.

Keeping the GST for daily and the AWD for a build isn't a bad idea.

15!!? Yikes! That's one third what I'm getting with
This GS :

And here, I dunno what year you have but they should be pretty much the same. The GS Spyder gets 20mpg in AT and 22 in MT. What I find interesting is that the 2.4 Spyder gets the same gas mileage as the 2.0 spyder GSX :D. I think EPA messed up because the spyder rated 18/26 is 20mpg combined, while my avenger rated 17/25 is 21mpg combined. Something fishy there as apparently 4th grade math isn't required for their calculations?? :

a modded 5spd gst is easier on the clutch and drivetrain than a modded 5spd gsx....the good thing about the gst is instead of breaking your clutch/drivetrain, you get wheelspin....the bad thing about the gst is that instead of actually using the power you paid for to accelerate....you get wheelspin.
