well I finally got to the step of putting the timing belt on my fully built motor. Im using hks 272 cams, with all new mitsu. timing parts and I cant get the cams marks where I want them. Usally they line up nice with the straight edge just like the diagram in the book. I've done so so so many timing belt jobs but this one makes me nervous. I dont like how it is going on. I dont iknow any deas would be great. I was thinking mabye a set of adjustable cam gears and just degree the motor, but I wanted to get by with the stock ones until i save up some more cash$$. thanks for any input guys.

I was about to start my own thread about this exact "uneasy" feeling as far as the installation of the timing belt goes. I am using comp101200 cams, I guess the could be compared to the hks 272's. I felt when I installed it that it was the best I could get, as far as the cam gears lining up that my cams would allow. Fast forward to starting the motor. It seems like its running well , however my one concern is that the idle vacuum reads 14hg. Now I've read that standard vacuum is between 18-22. I've also read that with cams, intake and exhaust overlap would cause the vacuum to read differently from stock. All of the leaks I have had are completely fixed and the vacuum continues at 14hg. I guess I'm asking those with similar cams what their vacuum readings at idle are?

Mark90gst, in no way do I mean to hijack your thread, I felt this thread was the exact information my thread would have contained, I just wanted to take a step forward in asuring my uneasy feeling was correct, before I went ahead and tore into the timing belt again :(

Brew, 14-15 in/ HG is perfect for the Comp's. My car pulled 16 in/ HG w/ the Comps and I just installed another set of the Comps this past weekend on a friends car and he is pulling 15 in/HG. It is b/c of the overlap that couses the loss, but you are right where you want to be.

Mark90gst, on to you. Do both the cam markings seem to fall a bit "low" on the timing install? Was the head or deck, or both milled down a bit? If so, a small falling of the cam timing marking usually follow, depending on how much material was removed.

If you can, please post a pic(s) of where it is completely timed, and we will review it, and let you know if its correct.

im useing the comp 14404(2) and they are horrably off... the car wouldnt start with them installed, uneven cranking and all, they were horrably timed does anyone have a link to a thread about degreeing them?

Mine are a little off down by the crank mark as well. I've been running it like that for the past 4 years no problems. Vaccum is normal. The block and head was milled before.

Do you think you could take a pic of your setup at TDC just so i can a vizual on waht your talking about?

sorry it took me so long to post back, my block is deck, head is decked and the timing isnt perfect, but i think many people go through this and dont even no it, i have 272's i get 8pounds of vacuum at 950rpms at idle which is fine, car pulls wicked and made over 400whp on pump with a decent tune, not the best low timing, im going to put a set of adjustable cam gears on it and degree the motor perfect for some more power, tell me what you guys think?
