The Big ROD thread!

Hey PrimedTsi
....so do you still have the Eagle Rods? ....making 1000hp?

I'm having trouble picking out a Rod that I like. The price jump is so big between Rods. I'm not the kind of person that buys skimpy parts, but I don't want to over build (over $pend) either because I'm on a budget.

That post was made over 3 years ago. I ended up cancelling the order and going with crowers.

You can never overbuild a engine in my opinion....Its always your wallet holding you back. If you think eagles are fine then run em. But "IF" they break you will be kicking yourself in the nuts because you didnt spend the extra 300-400 on the better rods. You could say the extra money spent is buying peace of mind knowing when something goes wrong your rod wont be the weakest link...

Yeah I know the thread is old but it still applies today.

I've pretty much come to the same decision. I've spent waaaay too much money on my set-up for me to skimp on Rods now. I figure spending the extra $300-400 is well worth it considering the flip side might be.... save $400 now, and spend another $5000 later after my motor is destroyed :sosad:

Well I sent Eagle Specialty Products an email myself and they responded yesterday. I informed them of the conversation and asked what they claim the rods can hold, this was what was sent back to me.

Cory,
Our "official" rating for our rods for the 4G63 is 900 hp. Now, there are several things you need to keep in mind: this is just a general guidline for what type of application they can be used in. Tuning, engine geometry, weight of components, how the engine is built, what kind of fuel the engine is running on, and even driving style has a tremendous influence on the life of any component (not just rods). This does not mean if you make 901 hp, your engine will blow up. Unfortunately, there is no absolute number I can give you that will be an exact "breaking point" so to speak. This seems to be what everyone would like to hear, but it is impossible to predict. We have seen our rods used in race-application Mitsubishis over 1100 hp. We are not comfortable recommending just anyone to do that - but it has been done on more than a few occasions. People are always upset when things break. Most of the time, it is due to something the builder overlooked or did not do; but most people refuse to believe they might have made a mistake. How many times have you gone to the track and heard "my car broke because I'm an amateur and I am still learning what I'm doing". Most often you hear: "my car broke because XYZ part broke". Even then, the best engine builders in the world make mistakes and sometimes parts just fail for unexplained reasons. Watch NASCAR, F1, IRL, NHRA on the weekend. You see engine failures there, too. You might respond, "but that's F1, NASCAR, etc". Keep in mind the output of your 650 whp 2.0L has a higher power-per-displacement than a NASCAR engine or an IRL engine, and is close to that of a F1 engine. I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Alan

So, just refer to my earlier post, 900hp FOR OUR MOTORS. Also after having done quite a bit of research on some other forums you would be surprised to see how they're stacking up to the big buck rods! I'll see if they'll let me release their info. Here locally I've seen one set of broken Eagles, one rod was basically ripped in half but it was because a wrist-pin blew up and all hell broke loose. Not the rods fault.
