Floating pin on 1G big rod

I have a set of Ross .020 8.5:1 to be mated to a stock 1G big rod.

Has anyone here using a modified 1G big rod for floating pin configuration? I'm getting mixed opinions on this as others say it's not a good idea, and others say that as long as the clearance between the pin and the bore is correct (one thou/inch) there should not be a problem.

Can I have your opinions please!
 
I would not reccomend this set-up in a steel on steel configuration, I.E. just resizing the small end of the rod for proper pin fit, and adding an oil hole. To do it right the small end should be bushed. At this point cost will become a issue, if you compare it to the price of a set of Eagle rods. The Eagles are an improvement over the stock rods and come set up for the floating pin.

If cost is a factor for you stay with the stock rods, in the pressed pin arrangement. Also going to the ARP bolts in the stock rods would be a good idea, but again there is an additional cost here, (for the bolts & resizing) If you have some money to play with then consider the Eagle rods, as an option.

Your budget, and goals will determine what rout you should go.
 
I had my big rods cut out for floating pins, kinda regretting it as I've got a noise that sounds a lot like wristpin clicking....either that or rod knock :rolleyes:

Big Woo are you talking about cost for resizing for the ARP bolts? Or no?
 
In that statement specifically I was talking about additional cost for the ARP rod bolts, and the cost of resizing (or reconditioning) the big end of the rods after installation of the rod bolts.
 
I found a machine shop that would re-machine the rods for fitting bronze bushings. Afte paying him a vist, he ended up not recommending it as good chunks of material will have to removed that will cause the rod to lose its strenght on the small end. Not worth the hassles.

I have just done the floating pin mod in the 1G rod, i used the eagle rod bushes and the hole was bored .059 bigger to accept the bushes. and to me thats not a great deal of metal to remove, they sometimes grind more than that off the top of the rod in balancing rods. What bushes were they going to use? if it was the metal backed type i could see a problem there! but after machining of mine they compare easily with a carillo, or crower that we use in our chev circuit race boat engines.
I am running a 2.4/63hybrid, HX35 turbo, 1600cc inj' standalone, and run it to 26lb boost around the streets, and no prob's as yet!
