I need a little help here, i am using some 1g rods with 2g pistons for my recent motor in my car, i took the rods and pistons into a local machine shop to have the small end of the rod enlarged 1mm to fit the 2g pistons on them, well the machinist told me that it wouldn's be a problem, so i take his word for it, also said they would be done in a couple of days, well days go by, than weeks, finally i go up to his shop, he tells me that he hasn't even pressed the old pistons off the rods because he hasn't figures out how to ream the end of the rod out. I immediatly demand that he give me my parts back, because i don't want to mess with some half ass stuff like that. So i take them to a mmore reputable machine shop in town. He tells me no problem, and that he will for sure be done with them in a couple of days, 2 weeks now, and i havn't heard anything. Doea anyone know of the machining process to bore the small end (the machine used, and the tools required) , so that i can go up into the shop, and be like here is what you need to do. This motor is for my every day driver, and i can't go that much longer without it. I just need to get it back together. Any help would be awsome.

I just talked to my machine shop. And this is my first time getting my short block, head, and crank machined. At first I was suspect, because they never called or gave me a quote. However, after 2 wks I called to check on my motor, they were more than helpful with what I wanted. So rebuilding the head/w vavle job, boring and hot tanking the block, machining 1g rods w 2g pistons, and polishing the tank. Took about 2 1/2 - 3 weeks for them to do it. Keep in mind they are a busy shop and had to order pistons and parts for the head.

So...I would think machining 1g rods on 2g pistons shouldnt take more than 2 weeks.

If they know what they are doing then in 3 days even if they are busy they should have it finished and all set up for you to drop into your motor. I wouldnt trus it with them, take the rods and pistons to a dsm specialty shop in your area, they will for sure know what to do.

I printed the page from the vfaq.com site and took it to the machine shop when I dropped off the rods and pistons. It took them about 2 weeks to get done, but they had a lot of other stuff going on. Plus i refuse to go anywhere else. They charged me a $100, but it was well worth it.

I went to a local machine shop near me in Roanoke, VA and they got my 2g pistons/1g big rods put together in 3 days! I just printed out the VFAQ link and took it in with me. They were a little skeptical that it would work but it does and I am very happy with the finished product!

I am still waiting on that bastard to figure out what the heck he is doing. I have made a deadline for tomorrow, and if he isn't done, i am going to get my shit and send it to jackson auto machine. IT is 100 percent bs, i usually have this machinist do all of my work, but it seems that this one is over his head or something. At first he is trying to tell me that the big end of the rods that i bought him are not correct, i took in another set of roed, he says that they are the same as the others, i said yeah, that is correct, they are all 6 bolt big rods, 4 of them are from a 1.6 mirrage motor, but they are the same length, same big ind diameter and width, same small end diameter and width, as the stock spec for a big rod. His dial bore indicator must be messed up or something, because i measured all of the rods before hand, and they were all in spec, and he is telling me that when he goes to measure them that is is way off. What a dousche. I will Let anyone in the mid missouri area know that if you are thinking of taking your shit to Jeff Smith, of JS MACHINE, than think again. You will be waiting for atleast a month.

If your up for a drive bring it to lawrence KS, my friend here just had his machined in town. Auto Machine and Performance did it, it took them less then a day turn around to do the job. All my friend did was take them the print out from the vfaq and they took it from there. Very quality work. Just letting you know if you are interested in a somewhat local area.

At this point, i am about ready to do anything, the guy still has my parts and is still giving me the runaround. It is total bullshit, he has the small end done, but he is now just having problems on the big end, for some reason, he is telling me that the big end is the wrong size, i told him he is full of it, becuase i just pulled them from a running 6 bolt. He is still trying to say that the big end measures wrong, but i measured them before i took them in, and they were to spec, i am about to go to his house, and get my shit, and take it to an actuall precision machine shop.

my local machine shop did an excellent job on my 1g rods/2g pistons. His name is Joe Todd. If you are interested his shop number is 417-453-6679. It took him about 4 buisness days to do mine.

1: disassemble rods and pistons
2: clean 1G rods
3: mount 1G rods in fixture and indicate in on a Bridgeport style mill
4: bore pin end to within .020 of finished size
5: ream pin end to within .002 of finished size
6: Hone to size on a Sunnen honing machine
7: clean rods
8: reassemble rods with 2G pistons.

For the question of how long does it take to do the work.

I went into my guy around 8 in the morning, or so and came back at 2pm, after his lunch break and he had them done. He laughed and said those little 4 bangers give him more of a hardtime than his big v8's he used to building. Just to let you know the setup he made for me has gone low 13's high 12's with no problem.

So i picked my shit up from that machine shop, and come to find out that he f-ed my balance shaft that i cut and brought in for him to plug the end up. He plugged it good, but when doing so he put the end that goes into the oil pump into a vice, and smashed it so it doesn't even fit in the oil pump, that bastard charged me for that shit. He also hit the valves when resurfacing my head. Had the rods and pistons for 5 weeks, and couldn't figure out how to machine the rods. SO IF YOU LIVE IN COLUMBIA MO, DO NOT TAKE YOUR STUFF TO JEFF SMITH THAT WORKS AT NAPA. My parts are now at another machine shop, i will see how that goes.
