That makes two of us! Should be good for a couple hp, might be enough for a gain.

Yeah, I'd guess the back half of the track would be the area of it's largest benefit.

Hoping to hit the track for some 'stock' fun runs in the next couple of weeks. A couple years back I had a 90 FWD Laser that I wish I would have kept. Very clean car, and ran great as soon as I got it, and completely stock down to the air can. Here is what it ran completely stock on street tires.

I pulled 100lb out of it (trunk stuff, rear seat, etc), added some slicks and an ebay MBC at 14-15psi and this is what it ran (on a slipping stock clutch):

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/9FaXfp09ln8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Hoping to duplicate, if not better these results. Both runs could have been better. The first had a bit of wheel spin off the line on the street tires. With the slicks, the car probably would have went in the 13.7s with just a clutch. The clutch slipped when I shifted into 3rd for probably a good second or so...boost dropped slightly then picked back up once the clutch had enough to grap completely. We'll see how my 'new" one does. Got a couple more things to take care of to make sure she is mechanically sound and I'll be ready to hit up the track!

There's is a lot of potential on a stock setup that can be tapped just by getting ECMLink and a solid tune, especially now with boost by gear and the ability to use the stock boost control solenoid.

:dsm:

I have that on the way in the mail already. Once I get it, I'll tweak with the tune with it stock to see what I can do...plus it will help me with learning to tune a bit more. Would rather start learning it better on low power and stock parts than once there are more parts on the car with more power!

Just want to clarify what your definition of *stock* is as 96 mph trap speeds suggest you are not 100% stock. I know what it took to run those traps in my Laser. While it wasn't a whole lot, it wasn't box stock.

Just some examples of what some may call stock, but, isn't:

-aircan mods
-air silencer removed
-boost solenoid restrictor removed/bypassed
-hollow cat

Well then, maybe it was a freak car. There were zero mods to the car in the first video I posted. The aircan was stock with the stock snorkel on it. The vacuum lines with boost restrictor/solenoid was still hooked up as from the factory. Everything was stock. No hollow cat. No shimmed wastegate. I cut the rivets and removed the snorkel on the aircan, removed the factory vacuum lines and installed the ebay MBC. Removed the 100 lbs, added some Summit 15x8 aluminum wheels and M/T slicks and ran the 13.8 on the slipping clutch. The temps that night were very good and there was very little, if any, humidity. You can believe what you want and raise a B.S. flag if you want, but I know what the car had...and that was nothing modified at all.

FWIW - IIRC, in stock form, the car put down 169whp/174wtq. I think it was a dyno dynamics that it was on, but don't remember for sure.

Well, 96 mph is definitely suspect for a truly stock laser rs-t. But, unless you had an off the lot car it probably wasn't fully stock anyways. Either way, irrelevant to the new car anyways.

When are you going to get it out for baseline starting point anyways?

I've pretty much decided to wait until the shootout to make any more drag strip visits. To me it makes more sense to wait until the cooler fall weather to risk getting booted out of the other track. Gives me a better chance at a good time then running now when it's overly hot out. I'm trailering the car to the shootout though so it'll be making plenty of runs there. Hopefully we get good weather down there.

I would love to make it out this Wednesday, but the possibility of that happening is very slim. I need to get the oil pump balance shaft back in timing and I really need to get the motor mounts swapped out.

Easy quick stuff! Get it done. :thumb:

Yeah, for the most part it is, but I have family in town right now, so I'm spending time with them. Probably be a couple more weeks. As much as I want to go soon, I might not just due to the heat. It was 106 here yesterday. The next 3-4 days are supposed to be over 100 degrees.

Timing belt done. Also pulled the intake manifold because there was a slight boost leak when I did my test. Swapping out gaskets and making sure to get everything buttoned up the way it should be. Also going to put at least 3 of the mounts in (passenger, driver and front) over the next couple days. The temp has been between 100-108 the last 3-4 days. I'm going to wait until this weather dies down before I hit up the track!

While you have your intake off, why not tackle the rear mount? Doing the rear will be a bit harder after doing the other three as there won't be that bit of movement anymore. Just a thought...

That's a great idea Phil. Never thought of it that way. Thanks, and I do believe I will do that!

I just figured with the added arm room provided by the intake not being there, you'll have some added manueverability which should make it easier. Glad I could help. Happy 4th!

If anyone is interested in progress and how the car is coming along. Also got my wideband installed and about to put the V3 computer in!

EDIT:

V3 installed. Idle is much smoother. 100lb removed from the car. I also picked up some track wheels...15x8 black Rota Slipstreams with M&H 24.5x8.5 tires. Got 4 of them because my buddy who was selling them wanted me to take all 4. No burnouts and only about 4-5 passes on them. The car seems to be running pretty healthy. I want to try to get my wideband tapped in and setup so I can log via ECMlink for tuning purposes. Hoping to hit up the track this Wednesday for Street Legal night!

So which 14b guys will be attending the shootout? Running any classes? I plan on taking the car on a trailer and running the stock turbo class, assuming I'll do some T&T after the first round haha!

Or,

Round 1 - Eliminate English Racing

Round 2 - Eliminate ARFWD

Round 3 - Bye

Final - Win against Kevin Jewer RWD

LOL:D

Lol :D I don't think my car will be all that quick on a 14b, though I still plan to try it.

For the shootout though I'll probably be on a bigger turbo doing something like this:

I always look forward to the crowd pleasing wheel stands.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Phil! Somehow even if all magical things connected I don't think I can compete with low 10/more then likely high 9 second cars. :D Buschur is allowing the stock appearing evo turbo's in the class. We all know what an evo can do on an FP Black.

Haha...just some humor today.

However, in competition, reaction time and red lights can win rounds.

A second+ gap would be hard to overcome on reaction alone, but, you never know. Quickest car doesn't always win.

Yeah it's a tall order, just don't count yourself out.

Higher HP, bigger turbo cars may break. Too many variables.

I'm pretty happy I made it to the final round on a stock appearing turbo, nothing wrong with that. :D

This is true. I've seen some really odd wins at the SO. It's a big race and anything can happen, and lots of people only race at the shootout every year. A regular racer with a small turbo has some pretty good advantages. Another benefit for autos is the easy spool. On the small turbos, I pre-stage at full boost and get pretty good reaction times. It is a pro tree, so make sure you're prepared for that. Any of you that can make it should try it out, I don't think you'll regret it. It would be great to see the stock turbo class be twice the size it was last year. :)
