My buddy is considering buying a 1997 Talon TSI and he wants me to ack if anyone could tell him about any general issues for this car.

Well it is a 7-bolt to begin with, so as we've all heard the connecting rods tend to be a little weaker, I'm sure not by a significant amount, then again, if your going for high HP, getting forged internals would be quite an obvious choice. Also I've seen a few people with crank problems with the 7-bolt, but that could be any number of reasons.

You could always do a swap?

just do the regular things you would with any car....first DRIVE IT. see if the transmission and the clutch are all good as long as the motor. Take a couple friends with you to look at the car, maybe theyll pick up something you missed. If anything is wrong with any of those walk away from the car. The next thing i would do is do a compression test followed by a leak down test. pull off te intake and check the turbo for shaft play. listen to the motor and see if its making any weird noises. look for any smoke coming out of the exhaust. Check out the suspension while your driving and see how it feels, check the cv joints just use common sense man, also look at the seller also and not just the car, make sure hes not someone whos trying to scam you. see if the timing belt and water pump have been replaced, ask for receipts for any of the work that he says has been done to the car. Thats all i got for now

1) drive it down the road and make a left turn while accelerating and feel if the clutch pedal moves towards the floor = if so WALK AWAY 2) DONT TAKE someones car apart with out asking! 3) if it has the top timing cover off already start the car up and look at the timing belt across the top between the cams and see if it jumps more than a 1/4 of a inch if so WALK AWAY 4) pull on top of the timing belt for tension, also if possible bull on lower harmonic balancer to see if it has passeger to driver side play!
