Ok so here is the story. I just got finished breakig in my engine and was wondering what it could do as far a speed. So me and my friend took it on a hell run and did 150mph. Nothing went wrong at all, not a single problem. So I was talking to another friend of mine and he told me that its not good to do if you have your balance shafts in. What i cant figure out is we werent beating the sh*t out of it at all we were in 5th gear at 5000rpm. Whats the difference between doing 60 or 70 at 5000rpm and 150 at 5000rpm in 5th gear, other than the speed of the balance shafts and what not. Is it bad to do that with them still there or is he full of crap??

Thats what I think as well, just because the car itself is moving 150mph doesnt mean thats what the shafts are going at. They will only be going as fast as the 5000rmp's will allow them. Im not sure at what rmp it is exactly but I think the balance shafts move twice as many turnas as the crank. As in for every 1 turn of the crank the balance shafts turn twice. Im not sure of this but it seems to make sense. So that would mean that if you are reving to 5000rpm the shafts are going twice that. I would like to know if i am correct in assuming this. Any info is appreciated.

What exactly do you mean by stop lying and read up on wind resistance, im sorry to say but there were 2 other people in the car with me as well, and what does wind resistance have anything to do with balance shafts? Please clarify

1: driving at those speeds is dangerous to others on the road. Also considered street racing in the court of law ( stop speeding)

2: lying.. I actually think you could hit those speeds with your mod list so im not sure there.

3 wind resistance: refers to going 150 and it in theory would be difficult to achieve.

Balance shafts spin twice as fast as crank so 5000 rpms = 10000 on (bs). They are removed for a liability, like insurance In case shit goes wrong.

A DSM driveshaft is about 3inch in diameter. Take pi times radius squared gives you a circumfrence of about 7inches. If your crank is turning 5000 rpms, the balence shaft is turning 10000rpm which is about 70,000 inchs per min. Times that by 60 min per hour divided by 12 inches per ft divided by 5280 ft per mile... and the surface of your balence shaft is spinning at approximatly.... 66.9 MPH....

Reqardless, your internal engine is spinning the same in any gear at a specific RPM. But there will be more of a load on the engine at a high speed as wind resistance force grows expodentially with speed.

When he said "stop lying" I think he was refering to your RPM at 150mph. My trans is FWD but they cannot be that different. I'm pretty sure your RPMs are higher than 5k @ 150mph. Don't ask how I know. As far as bad for them? Maybe, Submiting your fresh engine to sustained high RPM probably isn't good.

Maybe my tach is screwed up up my car idles at 1500rpm, and maybe its reading wrong, I dont know but I was proud when we saw 150. I know my speedo is right because its been set with a computer through the ecu. But anyway besides the belt snapping for the shafts why would high rpm be bad when you still have them. What he said was itll f*%k up if you do that with your balance shafts still in. I mean Im not an engineer or anything but I do have some knowlege of internal workings of these engines. But besides that I made sure when I rebuilt my engine that I used new parts not from ebay.

The road that we used was about a 9 mile straight stretch, it was the middle of the night and no one was on the road. I dont do this all the time, I was just curious and so were the other 2 in the car. Ive had this car for 3 years now and its finally running right after a crap load of problems. Still a few that need fixed but not bad. Mostly leaking water into passenger floor, and interior now but overall I am very happy and was just curious to see if there was any truth to what he had told me. Thank you everyone for the posts.

When my buddy took me on a ride on his bone stock 2jz, it topped out at 125mph.

I don't believe a stock 4g63 did 150mph.

^ It has to have a limiter or something. I know my friends 1.8l honda topped at like 130... I know my gst can hit the limiter at 140..

If anything it would be bad at high RPM as opposed to MPH. But you can rev to 7k with a bone stock motor with balance shafts fine.

Im going to have to correct you on this one. For number 1 your saying that going at those speeds is considered street racing in the court of law. You sir are wrong. Its considered wreckless driving with a $10k fine and 15 yrs in prison. That is the maximum punishment in the court of law. Im about to be a sheriff where I live so I am very familiar with the laws and court system. :rocks:

I don't have a problem with 150. I had my Talon at 155 10 years ago. Street racing. Ugh! Young and stupid. Ok well I do have a job that requires me driving so I don't do things like that anymore.
Like my friend Stephan said as we we're going down a CA highway @ 135 mph + in a Jaguar XJS the V12 powered Jag "seatbelts really don't matter at these speeds." after I expressed concern he wasn't wearing a seatbelt. Most any accident you get in @ 150 mph will kill you.
I've never experienced any kind of governor on the Talon other than rev limiter.
I'd like to see what the drag coefficient of a 2G is. Very slippery little sucker. Mid .30s I'd imagine.
Don't use what I've said here as an excuse to speed without a seatbelt or speed at all. Hell I'm lucky if I do more than 10 over the speed limit now. You saying it was in the night away from traffic makes me think deer. Ever see what a deer does to a car at 150? Me neither. But I have seen what one does at 80mph and it's not pretty. Have some appreciation for the lives of your passengers. Don't do 150 with passengers without proper safety gear on a track. I. E. full cage. Harnesses etc. Usually that means no rear passengers period.
At 150 you're going to smack into a car doing 60 mph in front of you @ 90. That's enough to kill everyone in your car. And that's a vehicle traveling 60 going in the same direction as you. We're your tires rated to do 150? Ever notice that in most high speed chases even without spike strips the first thing to go is the tires?
I know I know it was fun. You hit 150. I wouldn't do it again. Consider yourself luck.

Balance shafts are a liability in a modified DSM.

Well I did it one time and not planning on doing it again. I was lucky, very lucky. And the car is definitely not stock. I have a few mods. But like I said I was lucky and am not planning it again. It was a little scary driving at those speeds anyway. Ill stick to the drag strip for high speed. I was just curious on the top speed with my mods. And wasnt waiting until spring to find out. But anyway besides normal wear and tear, and safety, would it be bad with the balance shafts in? You see the way my friend made it sound was that it will ruin your engine if you just do it. Not as in something breaking but just doing it will screw it all up.
