Oh man, this was gut wrenching! I wasn't sure how fast I'd be with the new mods. A conservative guess had me around 12.2 or 12.3. Deep inside I really wanted an 11. So when my first run of the day turned out to be a 12.08 @ 113.69 I thought I'd get into the 11's if I could get a little more out of the car. I read the datalog, tweaked the tune a little, upped the stutterbox to 5750rpm, and wished for just a little bit of luck. Yep, sure enough my second run had a better 60' time, better 330' time, better 1/8 time, AND THEN I MISSED 4TH! OK no worries I can try again next time.

3rd run was 12.060 @112.81 Nope, try again.
4th run was 12.071 @113.53 argh! Now I know how Phil Beers must feel. ;)

I mention Phil because he's been a bit of an inspiration for me to make these runs with the mods I have. That's because I'm running a 14b turbo, stock 450cc injectors, stock sidemount intercooler, and stock IC pipes. I even drove the car to the track and back home.

I really, REALLY wanted an 11 today.

Hot Diggity dave!!!!! You are RIGHT THERE!!!
Damn, that weight reduction must have helped a lot! Looks like im going to have to take some more stuff out of my car while its still in front of my house. You arent allowed to break into 11's until i get my motor built, put in, and then run a 12!!!! ;)
Haha j/k go for it man!!!
Did you guys talk ron into filming any of the runs? If so, im gonna check em out when i go to pauls shop.
Looks like i still have a chance to make it out to the track to see you break 11's with the 14b!

Very nice

One ? though. On here is says that you have 450cc injectors and stock smic, but on your profile it says that you have 720cc injectors and an fmic.

he changed so the car would pass smog, and he never felt like changing back. He had a 50 trim and all this other stuff too, thats what he did the 11.6 in, but now basically his power mods are (to my knowledge) a mbc @? psi, a fpr, a built motor with 8.3 cr, stock cams off of unknown years (seriously, even Dave doesn't know what year the cams are, or if they are even stock, isn't that right Dave?) hacked aircan, a 2g mas (unsure about that one though, might still be on the 1g) and a lot of weight reduction. I think its around 300 lbs lighter than stock. He might have some other stuff besides that, but I'll let him be the final word, since it is his car.

as for 14b's, REPRESENT MAN!!!!, just goes to show you, a dsm IS the best bang for your buck. (in case you didn't pick up on that one, bang was used in that sentence as a pun because his launches are almost frightening.)

Thanks everyone. So I have to keep trying?!? I'm kinda burnt out from working on the car non stop these past 3 weeks. It's been exciting and motivating. I think I'm going to take a short break, go to some 4th of July bbq's and chill.

Then I'll see what else I can do with it.

There isn't much more weight I can take out and still drive it on the street. I already removed a total of 420 pounds, and I'm not heavy at 165. I even lost 5 pounds from wrenching on the car instead of eating, even trimmed my toenails, it still wasn't quite enough! :)

Yep, I haven't changed the mods list in my profile since I put it back to stock for smog check. tstkl has most of it right, except the maf is a very hacked 2G maf, no aircan, 21 psi of boost, intake cam is from a 1990, exhaust cam is from a 2G (I think), I also have a 3" PVC intake with radiused edges. I also took out my headlight and stashed my tool bag in Rons car. Thanks Ron!

No, Ron didn't get any vids. Instead Paul talked him into running his Supra. I got a sweet vid clip of a turbo drag bike doing a 9 or something. Amazing launch!

Thats a smoking MPH for all that stock stuff.
Thanks, it took some careful tuning to get the mph up like that.

I ran the same car with nearly the same mods a few weeks ago and learned a few things. I ran a 12.498 @109 mph then. Back then the car went just as fast at 22psi as it was at 25 psi. It didn't knock until I did the 25psi run, and even then it only knocked in 3rd and 4th gear by about 5 to 7 counts. Since you can run more timing with less boost, and I didn't get knock until 25 psi of boost, I decided to tune for 22psi of boost. So I started by adding 2 degrees of base timing. I burned a new chip which added even more timing on top of the custom timing map I used last time. In the chip I added one more degree at 6500rpm, two degrees at 7krpm. So my WOT timing map peaked at 27 degrees at 7k. I also saw that at 109 mph in 4th gear the engine was turning just over 6k rpm, so I knew I'd use the extra top end to hit a good trap speed. The stock timing map has timing peak at 24 degrees at 6k, then it drops off to 18 degrees at 7k. :barf: Compared to stock timing I added 3 degrees at 6k, 8 more at 6500 rpm, and 11 more at 7k! OMG I guess it worked:sneaky:

I also changed the suspension in hopes of hitting some good 60' times. The idea is to reduce weight transfer since a hard launch will shift more weight onto the rear wheels. I wanted to try and keep the weight distribution as close to 50/50 as possible accounting for the G-forces of a hard launch. I also wanted to keep the tires square to the ground when figuring the suspension movement at launch. So I lowered the car another 1/4", got some stiffer springs for the back end, took out some negative camber, and made sure the toe was zero at the front and 1mm toe in at the back since I still have the active toe control link back there.

I did another mod which gave results I didn't expect. I installed a seat belt that did not have a spring tensioner. It's just a belt with a buckle, you pull on the loose end of the belt to tighten it. When it's tight, it stays tight. I like it tight, just like a good pair of bouldering shoes. I liked how it locked me into the seat, especially when cornering hard. I didn't expect it to help with the 1>2 shift, but it did! I had something to hold me down so I could snap off the shift and flick the clutch pedal. I was able to shift so quick that the windshield wiper switch went on when I did the 1>2 shift. Luckily I anticipated this and unplugged the wiper motor ahead of time.

I'm getting good at figuring out what works and what doesn't, maybe I can pull another trick out of my arse and get an 11? I think I have to try and find out. :thumb:

pneumo,

every thought about pulling out the rear wiper motor? Thats a good 3lbs I believe. Are you totally gutted inside the car?

Yup, rear wiper motor is already out. The interior isn't totally gutted yet, the front half of the interior almost looks stock. I made a list of stuff I can take out which should add up to another 40 pounds. I can save more weight if I get a race seat, but that means I have to spend some money! ack!
When I went from a 12.498 @109 to 12.06 @113 I only spent about $250 for mods. That's it. The rest of the gains were from tuning the motor, installing a 2G maf, tuning the suspension, and practicing the launch+shift. The problem is, I'm running out of cheap and easy gains. The next tenth or two will not be as easy.

or run hoodless. Would you mind waiting until the late this month so I can go back up with you guys and see you run that 11? I need you to burn me a chip too. I was looking at prices, and if you can burn me a chip for 1000cc injectors with no ill effects, (besides a poor idle due to the size of the injectors) I think I'll get those from fic. I pm'ed you, so just pm me back as soon as possible so I can order those injectors, socket my ecu, and start making some trips to the city to talk to you about my tune and look over the maps. Are you spraying your intercooler with water between runs so its not too heatsoaked? I would imagine the stock intercooler should get heatsoaked like none other. I know if its crowded you get plenty of time, but I dunno how its been recently, just bring a spray bottle with water in it. We really need someone to go there and video and keep all my tools and stuff in their car while we race. (*cough*danny*cough*) Have you seen how much SHIT I keep in the trunk of my car while racing? I have that 129 peice (now probably over 140 pieces including a 20 inch breaker bar) tool kit, my spair, the factory tool kit, a quart of mtl heavyweight (I dunno, I noticed my tcase looks like its been leaking a tiny bit, so I check it often and carry some fluid with me just in case.) and those damn camaro headlights. I really need to get on that.

good luck with the 11's (and by that, I mean, hit 11's the second I start going up with you guys again)

I already cut out the supports under the hood and removed the insulation. That saved about 7 pounds, and it was free! There was a RX-7 at the track last time without a hood. It looked too ghetto for me. I'd rather spend $250 for a light race seat that saves 15 pounds than a $500 CF hood that saves 10. I'm almost finished buying parts for a full GT35 setup with supporting mods, so I still have to watch the dollar/speed ratio. :)

Dam this record attempt, I wanna put on the big turbo already! :)

maybe I'll just have to get an eprom chip with all the bells and wistles imaginable to give you the extra money for your gt35 setup. :D

btw, I just picked up the same injectors as you did, so you can just save that code (which Im sure you do anyways) for me.

as for spending money on your current setup, just make sure everything you do can be carried over to your new setup, race seats, cf hood, all that good stuff doesn't care what turbo you use. Btw, does infineon let you have a passenger on 10 second runs? (me thinking about your gt35r setup)

That would be very cool. :thumb: I'm sure I could come up with $500 worth of mods for your chip  You'd sorta be like a sponsor!

As for the intercooler sprayer, no I don't spray it. I tried spraying it before and it didn't seem to help. The IC gets nice and cool while waiting in the staging lanes. As soon as I start the car it warms up again, probably from all the heat being pulled out of the turbo, intake and licp.
For a while I was running a sprayer hooked up to the rear window washer bottle so I could spray while driving. That seemed to help reduce knock on pumpgas. Now I'm using racegas so I took it out to save weight.

Speaking of weight savings, the stock cloth drivers seat weighs 37 pounds, my new race seat weighs 17 with homemade brackets. :)

No passengers allowed in cars faster than 13.99. So no thrill rides allowed, just ask Mahesh!

that ride made me spend a lot of money... ROFL

Im not goin unless im racing something down the track!!!!! Anyways, you have ron to carry all the extra stuff... :p

Hey brian... what kind of minivan do you drive? Maybe we can bring our vans and race?! I raced my van one time before.... 18.8 baby! I'll have to improve on that time for the 90 plymouth voyager, 3.3L V6! Or i'll bring my D/D 86 honda accord lxi automatic with no 1st gear!

Damn i need to hurry and get this motor built so i can get the talon back on the track!!! Im tired of driving slow ass buckets!
