I'm thinking of doing the Skateboard bearing shifter mod and I was wondering what size the bearings are? I've checked other posts and can't find the sizes.
Thanks Will

Haha, I don't have a Dremel. If had money for that, I would've just bought a bushing kit instead and not had a need for a Dremel ROFL If you need some, just let me know, I can get ahold of some hopefully. If he doesn't give them to you soon :thumb:

I did the same thing a few weeks ago. Very good, and very cheap mod. Well, it was free for me since I already had the bearings laying around. Only difference was I used two bearings tig welded together on each cable end. Now I just need to get the shift plate bushings to finish things up.

I have some of these waiting to go in my car as soon as I get some "issues" solved. I have actual shifter bearings and not the skateboard ones, although I would imagine there is no difference. Just wanted to know if you feel any noticable difference in shifting and whatnot? Great write-up and thanx for the replies. :thumb:

You can fill out the end of the shifter cable better if you use two bearings welded (or in my cases JB welded) together. You can also shrink them down to fit them in by holding them by the center piece and putting them against a grinding wheel so they spin. (on top of sanding out the inside of the cable end)

Without planning, without going to the hardware store (well, until the end, because I broke a cotter pin) I had this done in under an hour. Easy upgrade! :thumb:

i actually just finished doing this mod too..let me tell you if you have the symborski shift kit along with the b&m short shifter and this underhood bearing kit....all i can say is wow...solid throws..it reminds me of shifting a mustang..it clicks right into gear.. im loving it..i would definetly recommend. this mod..its so cheap and effective:thumb: :talon:

Would use bearings like that make the shifter have more vibrations, isntead of real poly bushings??

If it makes the shifts as nicce (or nicer) than new poly bushings, that seems like a great idea.

You won't get any more vibrations in the shifter by using the metal bushings. The only thing you will get is much, much crisper shifts.

Hmm. That's interesting. I would have figured the metal in the bushings would transfer vibrations a lot more than poly. I never thought of that. Sounds like a worth-while mod.

I personally think it is a very good mod to do. If you combine the shift linkage bushings, shift plate bushings, and a short shifter, it's amazing what a difference it is from stock. No more squishy feeling shifts.

no vibration at all..and when the cars in gear you can feel it go into gear..and even when its in gear..the shifter doesnt wiggle..its nice and cozy in gear

so is there less to no more grinding?

I seem to grind a bit less If you are grinding a lot you may want to open up the center console (under the shifter) and adjust the cables. They may be out of whack.

thanks finally....i actually adjusted the cables today, the only issue is 1st, if i push too fast or hard itll grind slightly...ive got redline waiting to be put in...once its warmer its going in

THE BEARING MOD SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL WORK. I KNOW THAT THE STOCK RIBBER AND BRASS ONES GET OBLONG AFTER A WHILE. WHERE CAN I FIND THE BUSHINGS THAT GO TO THE SHIFTER IN THE CAB??? I'VE BEEN GOOGLING FOR HOURS AND ALL I SEE IS FOR 95 AND UP. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE TO GET THESE??

Ease up on the caps, man. :) Here is a link to the Symborski shift kit. At the bottom, you can choose what year car you need them for: http://www.machv.com/symshifkit1.html

This is what the shifter cable mod looks like when done:

:talon: this shift kit is for the bushings that go between the floor and the shifter bracket assembly, but where can you get the bushinge for a 1990 talon that go where the shifter actialy piviots on the assembly?? this is where the shifter moves left, right, forward, and back when cycling through the gears. these decinagrate after 90k and create alot of slop in the shifts. can anyone help me find these?? iv'e seen them for 95+ but their smaller that the 90 and wont work.ROFL

i think your talking about the rocker/pivot cylinder. Thats included with the kit in the link provided.

Edit: nevermind you have a 90.

is that what the shaft is for? in the link it says it;s not included for 90. a metal shaft would be far better that the crappy plastic stock ones. is this the only for 1990 talons? or are ther poly kits too?
