I'm soon going to drop the oil pan on my '92 Talon TSi AWD to clean out years if not decades of gunk, as part of an overall restoration project, along with replacing the rear seal and gasket.

I'm guessing that it probably doesn't matter that much and I could even use gray RTV, but if I had a choice, should I use Permatex's Ultra Black or Optimum Black?

The latter's supposed to be more flexible for "newer" cars, but at 28 years mine's not exactly new or even "newer". Should I stick with the tried and true Ultra? I don't have either at present, only Ultra Gray. Could I use that, or is Black better because it supposedly has better (hot) oil resistance?

Btw, there's conflicting info on whether you need to drop the oil pan to replace the rear oil seal on 1G DSMs. Yes, no, or no but it's easier/better if you do?

Oh yeah, after dropping the pan I'm supposed to replace both the return pipe and oil screen gaskets. OEM a must, or is aftermarket OK?

Well, Ultra Grey is what I have, Ultra Grey is what the FSM recommends, so it's what I'll use. It's just that Permatex specifically says that Black is for applications with oil. But then trans oil is oil, so who knows. Doesn't look like it really matters for most applications. Perhaps it's more crucial for high-end racing and other situations that really tax the system. Dunno.

I've always run Permatex "Right Stuff". Never leaked a drop, and I swear you could probably run the pan without bolts it holds it so well.
It does SEAL but your engine builder will cus you when he is trying to pry that pan off without bending the shit out of it ROFL and then trying to clean the surfaces completely. No doubt it is good sealant but what a bi*** to take apart, just like you said, you could probably run the motor without bolts after it sits up. :)

Thanks for the info. I wasn't going to use the Chuck Yeager-style RTV (may he RIP), but good to know in case I ever think of using it, that this is one downside. I assume that this kind of RTV is meant to be used in situations where you can't wait, like truck drivers having to make side of the road repairs where time is money, or in racing situations where seconds matter. I can wait. Boy can I wait. :hellyeah:

I recently used Ultra Grey for the first time and it was easy to apply and use. I had to remove the sealed item a few days later, and it was easy to remove and scrape off the solidified RTV, so no issues there. It's what I'll use on the oil pan. Thanks.

Ultra Grey, or Honda Bond is what I use also. I use Honda Bond because I have a buddy that works at a dealership and always brings me tubes and tubes that he doesn't use/need on jobs he does. Honda Bond does seem a little harder to remove though...
