As mentioned in my last post, got a 1995 Eclipse the other day...asked about the costs for struts and TPS, and have narrowed that down to doing it myself, as much as possible.

Ended up getting a check engine light today (isn't this car just awesome? hahaha), so I figured, might as well have that checked, and the random lurching with the transmission....

The verdict? One injector is going bad. Recommend replace all: $1500 (1300 for parts).
Transmission disks are going bad, recommend replace trans: $2700.

Woot. So, just as a recap, if I get all the service done to my car that they recommend, I'm looking at $5800. Not bad seeing as I only had $750 into the car that I traded for it.

:hellyeah:

So, I'll likely be posting up in Craigslist, or in the Southeast section, asking if there's anyone who's got some parts available, or the time to help me do this stuff.....

At least the guy at the shop had the courtesy to recommend that I do most of the work myself. Kudos to him for honesty.

Who said injectors cost $1300..?
EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts

Also you can rebuild the transmission with less than $1500...

You should definately take it to a different shop/do the work yourself. The trans will be more costly no way to get around that but you can get a used trans for a lot cheaper than that. The injectors are cheap, I just sold a set for $60 shipped they are out there look in the classifieds for parts.

How big of aftermarket injectors can you get for $1300 ROFL You can probably find someone selling just the one on here for like $15, easy fix. I'd recommend replacing them all though which is also cheap.

Used tranny on here is pretty cheap as well. I'm sure there's people in your area willing to help you fix both. Neither will be too hard to replace on your own.

Yeah, I know I'm getting hosed. Still, it's not as bad as the time I brought in my 97 GST for a tuneup a few years ago, and they wanted to charge me 4 hours labor for the sparkplugs.

Their explanation? An Eclipse's sparkplugs are underneath the intake manifold, and take a while to get to.

I kid you not. With me standing in front of the engine, they pointed at the intake manifold, and said the sparkplugs were under there. :ohdamn:

I figure you all could use a laugh, though, so I shared what I'm running into. :)

The other good news is my commute each day is only 7 miles (one way), down a 35mph road. So it's not like there's a lot of wear and tear that I'm putting my car through. She should hold out long enough for me to get the parts together.

I'll be updating all this stuff in my project blog, when I start fixing things. Good thing I knew maintenance always comes before performance.......

Also, about the transmission "disks"....the explanation was that an auto tranny changes gears by a series of shifting disks, and the friction material between then wears out, over time. :hmm:

When really used injectors could cost you about 60 bux...Are you sure you didn't send your girl to the shop to get quoted? I've gone places my girl got quoeted and the quote they gave me was quite lower than the one they gave her..

Injectors take maybe an hour to replace if its your first time..It's kind of a PITA tho..

It was my first time..LOL..Give me a break..It was a Pain man..I couldn't get them to lign up for squat..

Just messing with ya. They can be a bit stubborn the first time or two that you do them, especially on a stock car with all the crap in the way.

I'm spoiled with mine after the wire tuck, AN fuel lines, improved connectors, etc. I pulled and inspected them Friday and it was 15 minutes from the time I popped the hood till I started it back up...and I wasn't in a big hurry. :D

dude.. injectors are just as easy as replacing the spark plugs minus the mess from the gas!
But $1500 haha sh*t it cost me $1500 to rebuild my motor with forged internals, swap the rebuilt 6 bolt into a DL (1.8L talon) which required me to buy a ecu and wire harness, and also got a new dejon uicp with 3in GM MAF AND the MAFT..... $1500 buck for all that!

I would highly recommend you do you own work, its not hard at all, and if you every run into issues you can always come on here and post a "help" thread!! Thats the main purpose of this site, correct!?!

Ya well I like to keep mine stock looking..I love the wires tucks people have which would make it alot easier do do everything..The crap does get in the way, waay too often..Maybe if I get another car I can finally get rid of alot of stupid lines and wires..

So you're going through with a 1000% markup and you're ok with that? i love this place.. never short of drama! :hmm:

It was just a matter of time before someone called me out on that, haha.

Sure, the car needs love. But seeing as the last owner apparently no intentions of taking care of this thing...I'd rather see a bill, then see it go to the junkyard.

Calan, you say you doubt it was the injector...? I can't read tone of voice...is there something else you think it was, or just the fact that they were trying to take me for a fortune?

I do appreciate the overwhelming response from all of you. While I know enough about working on cars to know when not to use a mechanic....it's still daunting to get an estimate for $4300 in repairs.

The day did end well yesterday, as well. Got a 99 front and rear bumper and stock taillights to replace my chrome ones, for $20, LOL.

What is the mileage on the car? The Mechanic is saying that one injector is going bad..There's not alot of mechanics out there that know anything about these cars..So I you can bet that the mechanic heard a ticking noise while it was running and guessed that an injector is going bad..The ticking noise is a common thing for these cars, and doesn't mean anything is wrong..So the verdict it It could just be lifter tick, which is completely normal..

As far as the transmission goes..You could rebuild for about a thousand..Or find one on craigslist without any problems and swap that one in..

And then as far as cost is concerned if you do swap in new injectors there less than 200 dollars..Used injectors should run about 60 shipped ish.And a used transmission lets say 500 ish..So your looking at less than a thousand for new injectors and used transmission..Which is a hell of alot better than 4300$And the thousand is if an injector is going out than Your just looking at a used transmission..
