Today i was installing a new oil pressure guage on my 90 gst and when i screwed the new fitting into the housing it caused a crack. So i got another oil filter housing off another engine i had and proceeded to put it on. to get to the last bolt though i had to remove the crank sproket. In doing so i blocked the cam gears to keep them from turning to get the pulley off. Is it possible that in doing so i somehow knocked the timing out of whack? because now the car will not start and when i put a timing light to it while cranking, the timing mark doesnt appear to be close to where it should. I just cant find any other possibilities. the crank bareley turned until the screw driver caught ant then the bolts all came loose. How cold that mess up the timing, when the timing marks on the cam gears are still in the correct position?

I didnt remove the timing belt gear. Just the Crank Pulley. Ist it possible that somehow the belt jumped or something? I didnt even mess with the timing belt. the only belt i had to mess with was the one from crank pulley around water pump and alternator.

If you stopped the crank from turning by stopping the cams, you could have jumped timing. The timing setup isn't made to have reverse tensionon it. I use an impact, but in the old days i just put the car in gear, and put a screwdriver in the vents of the disk brake to keep it from turning.

Wow, ya i never thought of that, but ya i used the cams to keep it all from turning so im sure thats probably my issue. Ill try to get to it tomorrow or wednesday and try to reset the timing. I appreciate the help. Does this mean i have to take the cover, belt and all off and realign all the marks etc?

:) Uh-huh, pilgrim. Yas gotta do that task all over again. Sorry on that and good luck.

p.s. - I did the trick posted in VFAQ doing the motor bump thingey with the spanner bar to bust loose the crank sprocket nut.

ok great. today we re-did the timing belt. we got number one to tdc, aligned the timing marks on the cams, crank, and oil pump and got the belt, tensioner and all that on and still the same problem. It just cranks. We have fire from all the wires and plugs, and we even put some gas in each cylinder but it still wont fire for some reason. When i realigned all the marks with the belt on to check again, it looked like the oil pump sproket was slightly out of place. How could this be, and would it make any difference? the only thing we havent done is put the belt back on for the alternator but that really shouldn make a difference in the car firing, correct?
