Timing belt job leads to gear oil spill

Ok so I couldn't sleep, I decided to inspect my timing belt after all the horror stories I keep reading about. And there was so much play in between the cam gears, (approx 1" loose) I decided it couldn't wait. When I jacked the car up on the drivers side, gear oil poured out the cv axle. Is something missing, shouldn't that lock into the tran's.

I assume you mean out the tranny where the axel goes in. If so the oil seal there needs to be replaced.

Well if that amount of slack is normal, I'll consider this a learning experience.
Either way it needed done since the car been sitting since 05, and I been driving it for 3 months
But I was more wondering if there were retainers/clips of some sort, at the end's of the axle's.
But it looks like it's just seal's. Thanks for the replies, I read the thread, and that will be good to know for the new belt Thanks again.

Yeah, if the motor's been sitting that long, replace the belts.
