Replacing muffler with a straight pipe, opinions?

I think Kris was actually complimenting you, at least thats what I got from that statement. I live out here in CA so completely getting rid of the muffler would be a bad idea, even if I am plated out of state.

:dsm:

Like boost the exhaust volume is controlled by your right foot. If you have a straight pipe and you're always on it then you are going to draw attention. If you drive like a normal person then your car isn't going to be screaming constantly like everyone who's never done it seems to assume.

I'd agree but there is a minimum volume you can attain with any setup, then it's all louder from there. A straight piped system will inherently be louder than a system with a muffler.

My setup is plenty noticeable with a muffler if I cruise anywhere over 2.5k.

All I have is a downpipe and it's recently become annoying just because I am losing compression and it put much more load on the engine to attain a certain power anymore. It used to be not much louder than a muffled exhaust.

yea you guys are a bunch of ####y's haha i drive around like this. straight pipe no hood and no bumper. LOL well i have a hood now but still no bumper.

In illinois, im running an open dp...exaust leak acually... They dont bother me (except when i had no hood, no plates and no insurance). I dont get emissions so i ran no cat and no muffler, it was really annoying and when my recirc tube fell off it would shoot flames not to mention the lawnmower affect you put on your passengers.

these are the best pics i have. when i come back from school over spring break im guna get it all welded together

I like the overall look of yours. I'm going to try to tuck my muffler up under the car. I just need to make a 4" to 2 1/2" adapter, then probably use a 3" tip. I don't like the look of the can sitting there. Going to try to move it under the rear seat area.

OP, are you just looking for power increase, or do you like the sound too? No muffler would be too much for me. Mine popped loose one day and it was loud as hell and I already have a straight through muffler.

One of my friends used to drive his talon with the o2 housing as the only exhaust on his car, talk about being lowd...

He never got pulled over of two years of driving like that.

Im saying would removing the muffler in place of a str8 pipe cause back pressure issues or boost creep? Would u gain anything besides it being louder with a straight pipe? Right now i have a 3" dp no cat to 3" exhaust with a muffler but i was thinkin to remove the muffler and weld a 5" pipe to the existing 3" exhaust where it will be stickin out the cutout of the bumper.

Something like my buddies supra in this pic=

It depends on what kinda of muffler you have. Like a few people have said, a straight through muffler will keep the noise down and still give you flow. I doubt you will have any problems with boost creep. I don't know what your mods are, but I doubt most people need 3" exhaust. Some yes, but most no. Although, you already have it I wouldn't redo it unless you are having problems. With that said, go ahead and swap the pipe in, just be careful cutting it out so you can put it back in if you don't like the sound.

Dont do it. I had a shop fab me up a exhaust 3'' all the way back with no muffler no cat and it sounded like crap driving the car. In less than 2 weeks it was off the car and a thermal kit was put on and I am real happy with that.

Im not to far from bNasty in VA and im running a 3in cutout just before the converter and it is loud and deffinetly loud at WOT but it does get annoying at times trust me but for the most part I like the sound of it.. With the windows up I almost hate it but with them down I love it so has its up's and down's.
Havent had any trouble with police, you just cant be all on the throttle all the time and have to act like a normal person... I never see over 20% throttle if that when im driving daily and

If the exhaust exits the rear of the car rather than under the car, it makes a world of difference. Mine was not bad at all when I had a full interior when I did my fender exit. With the windows down it was loud, but I prefer it that way.

Mine did drone going out the back with a straight pipe, but I also have solid(aluminum) motor mounts and had no interior by that point.

My vote is still go for it.

OP, it seems you want to do it for performance reasons so I'd consider just running a great muffler like a Hooker Maximum Flow or Borla Pro XS (quieter). These will have a performance benefit over a stock muffler and still keep you legal decibel wise.

Usually states have a decibel limit so you'd have to see what your state says. One ticket at $95 would be the price of the muffler so think about it.

Those hole having to go back to stock exhaust because the officer said so is BS, they will give you a hard time but that's about it. If it were true then flowmaster, and all of these other muffler companies would be out of business, since they say they are 50 state legal and DOT approved. A lot of states clam a turbo as a muffler. The SRT4 neon had no muffler except the California model witch had to have a muffler to meet the states smog regulations. I say go for it, I will be!

Buncha wimps in here

That being said I recently took my cat off and put on a straight through midpipe

Drove it for 2 days before I was sick of it and put the cat back on

I guess I've grown up a bit over the past 3 yrs since I had my last DSM. :)

are you facking kidding me? What the hell is that contraption?? It looks like frankenstein.

When i upgraded to a 3" dp and thermal exhaust on my last build i got pulled over constantly and was told i needed to change it back to stock. Drive that thing anywhere in mn. I dare you. Hell the orange paint and crusty bumper will get it pulled over.

agreed...

My buddy had a straight piped exhaust on his Celica..In town he drove in 5th gear as to not get pulled over...And he drove like an idiot in the first place so IDK how he never got pulled over..That thing was loud as hell..I say do what makes you happy, but be careful..

I have a full 3 in straight pipe and I think it sounds good. You can hear the turbo through the exhaust and it makes all those cool pops and backfire sounds. I live in california and I have yet to have any cop trouble with my car and it's been over a year with this exhaust.I say do it!

I had a 3inch strait though set up and it sounded ugly, sounded like a mix between a tractor and a leaf blower, I ended up putting a bullet style resonator and it sounded a lot more quiet but still sounds like a tractor/leaf blower. I am currently looking into a good quiet performance muffler because I have been driving around without one for way to long, it gets annoying.
