So I'm looking at this - eBay Motors: 3" INCH TURBO UNIVERSAL MUFFLER EXHAUST SILENCER 018 (item 260392847282 end time Apr-22-09 21:51:13 PDT)

I'm running open dp right now and the plan is to bolt a muffler straight up to it, then get angled tips from autozone or wherever and point them at the ground. My question is about muffler sound, I want something kinda quiet since the muffler will be practically under the rear seats, but I don't know anything about muffler design. Will a straight through design like the one in the link be anywhere near quiet or does it give off that ricey honda sound?

To clarify I'm not saying that I need Cadillac quiet, just not rice fart can style sound.

A muffler like that will resonate pretty loud, not so much like a honda though, turbo charged cars always tend to have a deeper throatier sound. But yeah this one will be louder than what your looking for. Plus you would have to cut off that big tip to attach your turn downs.
Heres a link to give you some insight on making your decision. Google Image Result for http://stmarysjin.org.uk/HSW/gif/muffler-glasspack.jpg Good luck, don't forget about finding a place to mount your hangers for your muffler since that's an abnormal place for the exhaust to terminate.

Gooberlog, now thats a name from the past. You getting back into dsms? Last time I saw you was the Extreme dyno day. Im in the process of fixing up my 1996 tsi AWD.

Anyways back on topic. The muffler being "under the seats" wont make a difference inside. The only sound from a functioning exhaust will be the coming from the tips. Its going to be tough to mount a muffler anywhere but the stock location unless you get a "bullet" style muffler like this: http://dsm.dejonpowerhouse.com/edit/1-06_SS-Bullet.jpg.

Not to mention Id advise against ebay mufflers as Id be worried about flow, durability and so on.

i have an ebay n-1 style muffler on my car right now with my 3" turbo back and it sounds great. not too loud but has a nice growl under boost, and the tone is amazing.

There's two hangers on a 1g right after the spot where the CAT is, so I'll be fine. Might have to jimmy-rigg something, but I'll make it work.

As far as flow is concerned, surely a straight through design can't hurt flow enough to matter

First of it was my fault for not looking for you having a 1g. As for the flow statement I got a "glasspack"/test pipe off ebay that was claimed to be 2.5in a few years ago and it was ~2.3in actual diameter.

Yeah I've been outa the scene for a while but i just picked up my 5th 1g. I bought it all stock with only a 2100 clutch and a lightened stock flywheel, so the process has begun. I just got it taged and on the road. We should meet up some time and shoot the sh*t. PM me if you want.

Yeah Im on #3, I am finally recovering from a blown turbo thanks to good old uncle sam.
