anyone ever bolt a muffler straight to the o2 housing?

Just wondering if anyone's ever bolted up a muffler straight to the o2 housing? It would have to be a small muffler but you could make it fit. Would this cause too much strain on the exhaust mani/turbo bolts?

Let me hear opinions/comments.

Don't know why you would want a muffler hooked directly to the o2 housing, but it probably wouldn't hurt the exhaust manifold studs since they are already supporting the weight of the turbo etc. A few more pounds wouldn't hurt anything I would imagine. Why are you thinking about this? Do you want to run right out the side of the front bumper or what? There ain't much room for a muffler up front so I don't know where you would put it.

Heat would cook the packing material. Would probably need a muffler based on deflection to keep it working right.

I think what pboglio meant was that a muffler with conventional packing material in it wouldn't hold up to the high heat right out of the turbo. He recommended using a muffler which used deflection inside instead of using a packing material to quiet. Hopefully this clears up what he was saying.

If you want your car to be quiet. Just add two resonators to your existing cat-back. Also, if you have a test pipe swap it out for a Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator.

Think of how much resistance you would get rid of though, and remember I live in indiana where if I wanted to I could unbolt the downpipe and drive around for 5 years w/out ever getting pulled over. I just want something somewhat quiet.

Call me crazy, but most of the exhaust systems availiable for these cars offer low to no resistance to flow at all. If it's a straight through exhaust there is very little resistance. Are you really going to gain much from this? Probably not.

Or you could have a high-flowing turbo-back 3" or even 3.5" if your going for bigger numbers (but telling by your profile you aren't right now.) and use a regular muffler or add some resonators. Trying to put a muffler in an already cramped spot is not the smartest or easiest thing to do in the world, but I understand what you were trying to do.

I've heard of people running "Supertrapp" mufflers straight off the wastegate dump pipe. Due to the fact that this exhaust gas is bypassing the turbine wheel, it is nearly as hot as the manifold EGT's. Apparantly it works though vibration tends to rattle the "discs" loose. This is the only muffler I know that would possibly have a chance of being fitted vertically right off the 02 housing and short enough not to bottom underneath the car.

There are alot of drawbacks continuously dumping underneath the car. It will definitely make you sick anytime your driving it. I personally would do an exhaust cutout actuated by a pneumatic wastegate attached to a boost controller. You'd only need it under boost anyway.

The awd exhaust is much more free-flowing than the 1g fwd.

This is probably the best reason not to do it.

i realize that i'm probebly violating some rules by saying this, but you are ###ing stupid IF you do this. my advice is to just do it like you're supposed to and put the muffler where it belongs

Don't forget to take the scavenging effect of exhaust gases into account. Lower end torque depends on that---some back pressure is beneficial. Is this a track only rev to 10 grand type of car? Chances are the benefit of just eliminating your exhaust will be negligible when compared to installing an exhaust cut out. That way you can retain pretty much legal drivability when on the street and really let those gases out on the track.

Scavenging does not apply to turbo cars, the turbo itself is all the resistance that is needed, after that we want as free-flowing as possible.

Instead, I'd do something like what I have. I have an Apexi N1 turboback w/ a 3" bypass welded into the downpipe. When you want drag, just open it up and let er rip!

I wish someone would clear this up once and for all because I've read from tons of wisemen saying that it doesn't affect turbo cars, but everyone else says it does. I'm forced to lean in the direction of the wisemen of course, but the masses are making me wonder.

I've heard another DSMer say the car went from being fast to being completely gutless everywhere. On the other hand, quite a few DSMers have run open dumped at the downpipe and that combo seems to work fine if not a little loud.

How far down Harlem do you think you'd get before you got pulled over for open O2?
I had my last talon dumped under the rear axle for a bit with a dynomax bullett muffler and it was pretty loud. Then i ran it to the back with an additional magnalflow and it lost 4 psi right out of the shop. It definitely seemed like it had more topend under the axle. I do prefer to have the full exhaust as its quiet when cruising. I'd just get a cutout if it was that big of an issue. Open O2 would be very loud, but it would be interesting to see if the OP does this, retunes and reports back like you said

Depends where at on Harlem. In Glendale Heights, maybe you'd get 2 blocks if that Unless your running on 135th and Ridgeland, then you can basically drop the exhaust at the 02, and I'm not kidding, you could literally pull a top speed run without a huge effort

Everybody is on the quest for the zero backpressure exhaust system. If I had to do it, I'd run the 3" system I have now, and do a nice elegant wastegate actuated cutout right before the 1st bend in the downpipe.

I might try this for a couple runs out here on the country roads but I'm afraid of burning stuff up with that hot exhaust gas, I'm probably just going to get a 3in downpipe and stick a muffler on the end of it. I just wanted to know if anyone's every done or seen anything like that, guess not.

I've never personally seen anybody street driving with open O2, probably for the reasons you mentioned.
