Rebuilt motor, dumb mechanic

What does it not cover?
Overheating and abuse?

So when your headstuds stretch from running too much boost he can say that it overheated + was likely abused.
I think you got the shaft.

Hes been a good friend of my dad since they were in high school. It's not just some random guy.

Not to be a dick, but take your shit from him before he does any of that nonsense. Anyone that tries to build a performance application engine using random pistons etc, isn't someone I would take my gear to. the engine oil isn't the best but its break in. I use valvoline 10-w40, cheap but good detergent properties etc for break in. The fact that he charged you 60 bucks for new bolts shows he doesn't know what the #### he is doing. Cause last time I bought studs they were 80 bucks or so. Also some key things that you need to find out when they are machining the parts are piston to wall clearances. I didn't see where the 700 hp was brought up. But from the parts listed that's not going to survive at 700hp. I built the shit out of my engine and I think I would fold a rod at that level (eagle rods). If your close to MAPerformance I would give them a call. I seem to have this crazy idea that I need to check out shops before I take a build there. And ask the good questions, like can you surface the deck to RA50 or better. That's the first question I ask, because the majority of shops can't. So that prevents you from running a MLS head gasket which is a critical part of running over 500hp, unless you have some sick need to change stock head gaskets all the time.

EDIT

Holy balls, a ####ing year and its not done? get the car back, take his ass to court if you need. it takes longer than 8 hours for a proper build. I average about a 30 hours for an engine (See my build thread for details), that's balancing pistons, rods, (i send cranks out for balance), CC head, measure oil clearances, measure / size piston ring gaps.

Point is, you need to know certain things about these engines. Like estimated boost, expected cyl psi, expected use ie street/ strip vs drag vs road race. I really don't thing your guy knows dick about any of it. Get your parts and money back, walk away. Get someone that can actually talk specs with you. Like why do you run 0.0035 thou piston to wall clearance on forged aluminum pistons, street / strip debate between 2618 vs. 4032 alloys. Unless its an a world war, nothing takes a year. A year on a complete car build is to long. It may be time to get your feet wet in the engine building world. Find a good machinist that knows his shit, has a decent shop, and good workers if he is not doing the work himself. One thing, just because someone has a 900hp 4 banger doesn't mean they know what they are doing. But in your case they would probably be better than your guy. LOL

1mm HLAs rock! I am actually looking for sets :p Hint, they work great with FP 4R/5R cams

My buddy and I were going to do my build (buddy graduated from technical school, was a mechanic at toyota, built his own 330whp civic si) but my dad wanted a guarantee warranty which is why he got his buddy, who is the mechanic doing my motor. I didn't pay for it to get fixed so I had no say. I will say though that he has built some badass vettes, trans ams and camaros that I have saw but I don't ever think he has built a turbo foreign car so ya, we will see how it runs.

ROFL Ryan, I can't wait to see your DSM on the road. I pray that you get your fu(king car back sometime soon. Sh1t school starts up in a month, so I would hope you don't need to get a ride with your mom to make it to class. You really should consider a lawsuit on that mother fu(ker. Your car has a bunch of rust on it that was not there before, I bet your perfect tan leather has split, and your paint can't look good. It has not been washed in over 1 and 1/2 years.

After 2 1/2 years he finally got his car back. Only to find out that there are now a bunch of rust patches and the mechanic messed something up. It has low compression (100,130,130,130) and knocks pretty bad. Needless to say it is back at the mechanics getting his shit rebuilt ROFL

haha for that price i'll build it up here at my place, have my machinist do the machining and build it with wiseco's and eagle h beams, and deliver it back down to missouri installed in the car running LOL..what a douche

I read this entire thread and he keeps on about how it's his dads money. Yeah but who's car is it and who's the title name in. I'd rip it out of the mechanics hand and went to court. Specially over the rust.
Whatever, his time and his (dads) money.

WOW!! I would look into a law suit. Make him refund the money spent ,replace your block and pay for parts and labor on a new built, then pay for the rust and any other damage to be repaired the 2 1/2 yrs. it sat at his shop.

I'm pretty sure you can take your car to a new mechanic and make him pay for THEIR work and get your money back. I think I saw that on Judge Judy LOL

Damn thats ridiculous, no offense ryan but its far past time to man up! At a month of it not being done REGARDLESS of if he's a family friend is dumb. You shouldn't have let it go this far knowing you're being ripped off with parts you don't feel comfortalbe about IN YOUR OWN CAR! Again no disrespect intended but something should have been done about it a while ago. Jimmer307 if he really was your friend you shouldn't have let it go this far either kind of a dick move on you part IMO

I am interested in what a turbo gasket kit consists of for 70$
Tell him to pull out those shitty platinum plugs and put in some NGK bpr6es or 7's
And a Topline Oilpump kit is only 150$
Should have spent extra 20$ and got ARP head studs

But looks pretty typical for someone who doesn't know whats going on

I haven't read all three pages of this but I felt the need to express my opinion on top line oil pumps. I put one in my built motor, it lasted 400 miles and blew out. I was in the middle of a pull when I lost all oil pressure. Spun 3 rod bearings and 3 main bearing, trashed the block because of all the metal debris that went through the motor. Basically wasted a $3000 bottom end because I wanted to save $100 on an oil pump. After I started telling people of my experiance, I was told by numerous other people that they had similar luck with topline oil pumps and that I never should have ran one. So go ahead and run a top line oil pump and save your self 100 bucks but you better have 4 grand to give this guy to build you another motor in a couple months. Never again.:notgood:

wow wow wow that sucks !!! ryan come on bro stand up and do something! 30 months with no car and then the motor is caca! you have to do something, get your money back !!!!!! this is straight BS...

LmaO That guys is charging you enough that when you blow he has change to build it back. LOL

thats ALOT for a rebuild. and he didnt even deinstall/reinstall it!! LOL
i posted recently about the cost of a rebuild etc, i live in the stL area. is there a decent place to go? preferably someone who will LISTEN LOL

4g's could of gotten him two 4g63 motors LOL

I kind of skimmed through the whole thing but did that thing ever came with warrenty? That's why I trust no mechanic when it comes to these cars. The only people that touch my motor are dsm freaks and pro's PERIOD.

just might be 2011?

For a solid motor... seems like 2012.

After 2 1/2 years he finally got his car back. Only to find out that there are now a bunch of rust patches and the mechanic messed something up. It has low compression (100,130,130,130) and knocks pretty bad. Needless to say it is back at the mechanics getting his shit rebuilt ROFL
You need to get your buddy back in here so we could talk LOL

just wow. i could rebuild, and turbo my n/t for less then you got raped for.

the second i saw those compression numbers and heard that knocking, i would have had a lawyer on the phone asap.

but i wouldn't have waited that long for that result, i would have either had the mechanic build the motor the way i want, or kiss my ass. if he's getting paid 4K to do something for YOU, then you should have a say in the way its done.

After he is done building your motor for the second time, tell him to cover the cost to repair all the rust and a new paintjob or he will be hearing from a lawyer. at least that way you may actually get your moneys worth.

Trust me guys I have done everything I can to get Ryan motivated. He is pretty spineless when it comes to this. He always leans back on the fact it is his dad paying for it. But when it is all said and done it is still HIS car. I would have sued him after a few months of having NOTHING done to my car. It has been mentioned already but... What kind of friend double charges, takes 2&1/2 years, and let's a friends car rust to shit while waiting to get worked on???? This guy is a straight up scum bag. I am mad for Ryan because he is getting totally effed. That is all I can do. I wish I could file a lawsuit for him but it is not legal. I'll let you know what happens. Though it may be a few years before it is all said and done LOL.

On a side note... I have owned 11 different cars (8 different DSM's) in the time it has taken his mechanic to rebuild his car the first time. 7 of those DSM's were cheaper than his rebuild and 5 of those have driven damn near perfect. Just some sad sad food for thought.

I don't get it... The first motor and only motors I've ever built was the 4g63t's. It's not rocket science. I just put a stroker motor together in less than a weeks time after I got everything machined and all my parts purchased. The mechanic just must not give a shit. Any real mechanic wouldn't have a problem getting one of these things together.
