Rebuilt motor, dumb mechanic

Wait.. he's going to paint your engine bay too? Do it yourself. He'll probably #### more things up, break bolts, over spray on shit, and use black gloss paint.
Also, for sitting outside that long with the hood open, rain... snow maybe? How many electrical problems will you run into? How many hoses have become dry rotted now.

The mechanic is probably banking on stuff not working so he can charge more to "fix it". What a jack a$$! MAPerformance 2.0l Shortblock (Stage 1) - Modern Automotive Performance and then you could get a really good head for less than 1000. Sorry for whats going on and I hope you either blow it up and get your money back or sue the pants off that guy. Does he wear your size?? LOL

I give it 3 months. Next time don't let your dad decide your life unless he bought the car in the first place. For 4k you could of payed me to fly out there with a motor and installed it and be done in a day or two.

Just received a message from the mechanic on facebook, I am at a complete loss of words right now.

"Ryan I need to know if the crank in the engine had a main bearing cradle or sepatate main bearing caps for crank.. Having problem getting the right special thrust bearing. Let me know!!!"

LOL:barf:LOL:barf:LOL:barf:LOL:barf:

Aside from the "special thrust bearings", he should know if it was the cradle or not. Didn't he take the lower end apart?

go to the shop with a flatbed and dont pay him a dime. leave with your car and your motor in pieces. and save the all the receipts and the facebook messages for the day he TRYS to sue you. tell your dad sorry but its not worth it to me and its been a year and cut your losses. better to have a dsm in a million pieces at your house than it being else where and getting messed up. but i would have done this after a month.

and if i didn't live so far i would personally help you

Not paying for any of it, Dad is.

but still its a waste of your dads money and a waste of YOUR time.
its usually either time or money but in this case its both..

It was too funny not to update...

Hi Ryan, Got great news!!!! To builder just called me and said all the machine work is complete. The short block assembly and head are ready to be picked up!!!! I will need the rest of deposit for the parts and machine shop to finish the build.. The labor portion will be due when you pick up the car.. The only extra expense was
125.00 to bore the cylinders as you can only get turbo pistons 20th's or 40th's.
parts total: 2999.51 - 1100.00=1899.51 due on parts
labor and tax: 978.75 + 201.22 tax = 1179.97 due when car is complete
Total: 4179.48 parts/labor/machine shop/paint/mount tires/
I'm also sending a revised est. with boring cylinder charge..

BTW: Someone should call him and tell him he's a fu(king retard.

Id love to call him but, Im afraid that might stir some shit and cause more problems for you. Sounds like you have enough on your plate right now. If possible, get your grandmother and your father involved in this a little more. It might create some unwanted family drama but you need to get it done to have your car back. Id sue the mechanic also.

OMFG you tell that jack@ss to give you back your money or your going to civil court. There is NO reason for it to take a year to rebuild this motor. It takes 8 hours after getting all parts together. Thats being generous.

700hp is retarded and your rod bolts will break long before that.

4k is a ####ing buschur shortblock territory. Its not some POS backyard mechanic BS.

wow, i just rebuilt my whole motor with evo 9 pistons, oem rings, 1g rods, mls gakset, arp studs, tri metal bearings, oem mains, and machine work for less than your 1,700 machine work bill. thats crazy what all did they say they did?

People who don't own DSMs have no idea what they are doing when they do anything to them it seems.

I had a guy at work tell me it was impossible for my friend to make 505 HP on pump gas with stock motor. Which is funny because when Lucas tuned it and dynoed it that is what it made.

The idiot also went on to say our bottom end can't handle more than 16 PSI and no stock bottom end besides the b18 can.

God I hate Honda guys.

I never would've let the guy touch it. Sounds like he probably won't honor your warranty either when it blows up.

This is cheaper and has a warranty. It's a 6 bolt to boot.

Oh and Kar-king sucks, no one buy from them unless you like mis-matched rod caps, 1mm HLAs, half-ass hack attempted ported heads, shoddy gaskets, and low compression.

I'd tell your Dad to take his head out of his ass and listen to you for once. You obviously know what's going on and he doesn't. If your Dad is so Ignorant to pull his head out of his ass, throw some facts down his throat so he can choke on his pride a little harder when he "thinks he's getting a good deal".
It's nice that he's paying for it but hell, I'd rather get my 4k worth.

What does it not cover?
Overheating and abuse?

So when your headstuds stretch from running too much boost he can say that it overheated + was likely abused.
I think you got the shaft.

Not to be a dick, but take your shit from him before he does any of that nonsense. Anyone that tries to build a performance application engine using random pistons etc, isn't someone I would take my gear to. the engine oil isn't the best but its break in. I use valvoline 10-w40, cheap but good detergent properties etc for break in. The fact that he charged you 60 bucks for new bolts shows he doesn't know what the #### he is doing. Cause last time I bought studs they were 80 bucks or so. Also some key things that you need to find out when they are machining the parts are piston to wall clearances. I didn't see where the 700 hp was brought up. But from the parts listed that's not going to survive at 700hp. I built the shit out of my engine and I think I would fold a rod at that level (eagle rods). If your close to MAPerformance I would give them a call. I seem to have this crazy idea that I need to check out shops before I take a build there. And ask the good questions, like can you surface the deck to RA50 or better. That's the first question I ask, because the majority of shops can't. So that prevents you from running a MLS head gasket which is a critical part of running over 500hp, unless you have some sick need to change stock head gaskets all the time.

EDIT

Holy balls, a ####ing year and its not done? get the car back, take his ass to court if you need. it takes longer than 8 hours for a proper build. I average about a 30 hours for an engine (See my build thread for details), that's balancing pistons, rods, (i send cranks out for balance), CC head, measure oil clearances, measure / size piston ring gaps.

Point is, you need to know certain things about these engines. Like estimated boost, expected cyl psi, expected use ie street/ strip vs drag vs road race. I really don't thing your guy knows dick about any of it. Get your parts and money back, walk away. Get someone that can actually talk specs with you. Like why do you run 0.0035 thou piston to wall clearance on forged aluminum pistons, street / strip debate between 2618 vs. 4032 alloys. Unless its an a world war, nothing takes a year. A year on a complete car build is to long. It may be time to get your feet wet in the engine building world. Find a good machinist that knows his shit, has a decent shop, and good workers if he is not doing the work himself. One thing, just because someone has a 900hp 4 banger doesn't mean they know what they are doing. But in your case they would probably be better than your guy. LOL

1mm HLAs rock! I am actually looking for sets :p Hint, they work great with FP 4R/5R cams
