Which would be a better choice a rebuilt motor or a used JDM cyclone? Also does the cyclone have everything I need to swap out and still be legal? Thanks for the info!!

The cyclone manifold does'nt have the emissions hookups so you would have to use your stock one or rig up the cyclone to work. I f you get it from a good source then it should come with everything. I would sit down and figure what a rebuild vs. getting a JDM motor is going to cost.

A used engine is a bit tricky, there are stories of engines arriving with the timing belt snapped and the head trashed, and then other people have loved their JDM motors. Myself I would rebuild an engine, just because I would know what's inside of it and what condition it's in. It also depends on what you want to do with it. If you want aftermarket internals, it would probably make more sense to go with a rebuilt USDM motor for the price, as they are pretty much the same engine, give or take a manifold.

I put a jdm motor in a car for a customer. I would not buy one. I would rebuild a motor. There was so much sludge in that motor it was horrible. I have heard that the do not change the oil in their cars since oil over there is so expensive. Atleast 35k on the original oil. I pulled the oil cap and there was atleast a 1/16 inch of sludge build up, it was sick!!!!!!

I bought a JDM motor for my car (two acctually, one for Hellotbone) and his was fine, mine had a trashed belt and head as said above. Both motors were very clean inside though.. The next one I got to replace the timing belt on was mint. It was very clean inside no sludge, the oil from Japan was there still and pretty good. I tore the whole thing down and everything was super clean inside.

I think it's luck of the draw really.. My motor was soo good infact it was a shame to pull it appart it really had 50k on it like they claim. The cylinder walls were mint, the valve cover was totally clean inside and had absolutly no oil staining on it as well as the head. The bottom end was so clean and mint it was scary, the oil pick up had one to two particles on it but thats it.. WHo ever had this one took care of it.

It just seems like some of them are junk while others really do fit that excellent condition 50k motor thing they always shout out at us...

my motor was also super clean. at first, i thought it was either new, or freshly rebuilt. pulling off the oil cap, inside was spotless. when i pulled the exh manifold to install my ported one, i could see it had been run, how much, i dont know. one exh stud was already broke. changed them all to stainless. doing a timing belt on a motor on a stand is so easy, it's like you finish so fast, you get up and feel like you forgot a whole bunch of stuff. i changed out everything, just because. what few drops of coolant that were still there looked fresh. same with what little oil was left, looked like it was just poured. my motor was from an automatic, i think they havent been beat on like the rs or m/t motors. all the guys who came and looked at it were amazed at how clean it was. i would do it again in a heartbeat.

Where is a good place to get a JDM, the only place I know of is ARD Performance? Also is there a good place to purchase a rebuilt 4G63T or should I just have someone rebuild it for me. I don't want to rebuild my motor I want to buy a used motor and rebuild it or buy a JDM and have it as a spare to put in at my convenience. Thanks for all the great info, I appreciate it.

Rebuild it because you get what you want the jdm is the same besides the cyclone intake manifold."sometimes you get lucky and they come with a 16g turbo and 550 injectors I myself have seen only one out of like 20 I have seen" :thumb:

My JDM motor was in great shape. Everything was intact, no carbon build up on the valve cover, runs great. We pulled all mani's and accessories off and swapped them with the original USDM ones. The only hang up I had with mine was it came off an auto, and it had no flywheel. I would strongly recommend you stay away from JSpecAutoSports.com, shittiest service ever. It took 1 1/2 months from when we ordered for it to get here. I saw this site the other day : karking.com They have the best prices on rebuilt and used 6 bolt 4g63s that I have seen.. .too bad I didnt see it before.

As long as you know where you are buying a jdm engine from you'll be fine with jdm. It is a risk though. Some sites sell jdm engines for 2-3 months at a time then screw people over and change their name and do the process all over again. I personally would go with a rebuild over the jdm.

My JDM engine arrived clean and runs great/strong. I got mine through an importer in NC. However, if I would do it all again, I would rebuild an engine just so I know what's inside. JDM's, like stated above somewhere, are pretty much a 'luck of the draw' thing. you really don't know what you're going to get until you get it.

If you do decide to go with a rebuild, there is nothing wrong with using your current engine. You have a 91, therefore it's a 6 bolt, which is great. What you should do, again if you decide to rebuild, is get your cylinders bored .020 or more over. Then there are plenty of options as far as rods and pistons go. There is no need to get another used engine and then rebuild that one when you already have a perfectly good 6 bolt sitting in your car.
