So i have searched, and searched. Alas, have not found an answer as to what may be going on with my car.

I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS.

When the car is idling it will sometimes have a very loud rattling/scraping type sound coming from the transmission. This will instantly go away if the clutch is depressed. The rattling/scraping only happens occasionally and almost always does on a cold start. If i drive the car for a few seconds when it's rattling/scraping and then release the clutch and let it idle again the sound usually goes away. Occasionally if i let it sit there long enough it will slowly start to rattle/scrape and build up gradually to the consistent noise.

The weirdest thing I find is this noise comes and goes and its not always there.

Any ideas on what's going on?

throw out bearing. get an oem unit. if you have an aftermarket they can do this from day one as they are not always the correct size/ fitment.

Pop the bellhousing inspection cover and inspect the flexplate to flywheel fasteners. Pop the clutch fork rubber boot off and check inside there for any visible issues.

Typically, if the depressing the pedal eliminate the sound, it may be an issue with the pressure plate or loose fasteners.

I had the same problem with 2 of my gear boxes.if you take off your driver side tire, you will see a cover on that side of your trans.if you take off the cover you will find a thin strip of metal shaped like a cork screw.slide it out and make shore its clean allso clean the tube.Drain the oil and only use ATF-4 fluid. That was my problem. For 2 years I listened to that annoying scrapping sound. The right oil fixed the problem!

I'm also starting to have this problem. I have been told its the throw out bearing. But of just taking that plate off and cleaning that tube does the trick and changing the oil type. I will sure try that.

If anybody has done this. Post up pictures?

Is the throw out bearing hard to replace?

Do I need to worry about it?
