What is considered getting too hot? I have heard diff. #'s. I ask b/c I noticed that my car got up to 212 at idle last night after a few hard runs (check out my other posts for more info on my car's rebirth!!!). At a "start-up" idle it'll stay between 194-197 though. FYI, I have a 16psi rad cap, 180 deg. therm, 12" 1400cfm rad fan, and a Fluidyne rad. I'm just wondering what would cause it to run hotter at idle like that (didn't before with the RRE kit....has the IRC street kit now). Any ideas???

Sorry, you are correct. 2g's thermostats are 180*.

Ok thats what I thought. Bought a 170 degree one from NAPA.. I know a thermostat is for keeping the engine warm not cool, but I've heard from more than one person that it sometimes works. ECU learn mode turns on at 170 also, so 170 seems like a better thermostat than stock. I would really like to keep temps in the low 180s if possible. Seems its going to be very warm this Saturday, so I'll be installing my punishment radiator kit with fans, shroud, thermostat, and my shiny new STM radiator brackets... We'll see what happens.

Ahh, wth. I had this saved in a text file along with a bunch of other randoms:

Enter ECU Learn Mode :: 170F (82C)
Coolant Fan ON :: 200F (93C)
Pull 1 degree timing :: 206F (97C)
Pull 2 degree timing :: 224F (107C)
Enter Open Loop Mode :: 228F (109C)
Default Coolant CEL :: 235F (113C)
A/C Override :: 240F (115C)

I think I got it from a dsmlink tuning tutorial that someone posted. Thanks for the info. I still think my hot car will DEFINATELY manage to keep the temps above 180.

hey everyone.
my question is, what is the normal operating temperature on a 420a motor?
i have a built all motor 420a with .040 over pistons, just this week in vegas it is 95 degrees.
during the hot day my motor stays at about 190 degrees and at night it stays at about 140, is this normal.

my stock temp gauge does not work so i took out the stock temp sensor and replaced it with an after market sensor that is connected to my after market water temp gauge. so the stock sensor and harness is disconnected which means that i am only running on 1 fan, the ac fan. i also have no ac and ps... thanks alot guys. i just want to mess up this built motor.

180 degree one from autozone. i just put it in today. i have been running my car with no thermostat so i havent tested it at night yet. but about 190 on a hot day is about average? no damage to the fresh built motor?

I would question your water temp gauge, as to where you have it installed/how it's installed. The stock sensor is already in a good place; I would get a logger and match your findings with the aftermarket gauge for accuracy. If your engine was stuck at 140*F you would never get out of warm up mode (you would know because of your gas mileage/ constant richness). Your engine is usually fully warmed up around 160~170*F. On a hot day I usually see about 180-200*F...around 205-210*F is when your fans kick on (usually idling for a while). In the winter i run the 180*, in the summer i run the 160* thermostat.

good to know. my night temperature was stuck at 140 only because i had no thermostat in. and when it was cooler at night the water temp read at about 115 on the freeway about 3 weeks ago. now that i know this info i feel much better. this whole time i thought that i was overheating at 190. but now that i know that this temp is normal i feel much better. thanks alot 96turbogs...

Hey friends, need help.
I know there are 2 temperature sensors 1 for the ECU and another for the Gauge right ?

I think my stock Gauge water sensor is faulty.

Most of the time, when my ECU is reading 210, my gauge needle stays at the middle.
But then SOMETIMES at the same 210, my gauge needle starts to go up, even getting to 1/4 from the red line sometimes.

My fans are kicking in normally ALWAYS at 210.

My question is: Should I TRUST more in the sensor that sned info to the ECU ? I'll try replacing the gauge sensor, but my fear is that the ECU one is deffective and thinking it' 210 when it shoul be at 220, 230...

Thanks !!!
