Just seeing what everyone opinions on the use of water lines on turbos.

Alright i know some turbos run without coolant and i was thinking if i could run my 16g without any coolant lines? Has anyone done this?

You can run it without the water lines. Just make sure you don't shut it off right after you beat the snot out of it so a turbo timer or an alarm with a built in timer should do the trick.
Use some decent oil and change it every 2500 miles or so.

I wouldnt do it... It was set up from the factory to be ran with the lines for its own longevity, by removing them that is counter productive to what the factory has done to provide a long lasting turbo...

To touch base even better, a friend of mines who used to have a gst, he ran his without water lines and needless to say the turbo didnt last very long at all. Ive always ran mines with all the stock water lines, and I have over 15k of over 20psi boosting on mines for whatever that is worth...

+1 on Black Bullet.

Those water lines are there for a reason. Sure, some turbos dont use water lines, but they were designed that way. 16g's weren't.

Coolant lines are in place to minimize oil coking in the event that the engine is shut down without the turbo being properly cooled down (common on daily-drivers). They are NOT "required", even if the turbo you have installed has the coolant line provision.

The warm water in the turbo's center housing prevents a rapid cooldown, where the oil is able to crystalize and burn to the turbine shaft and internal parts. This is common on cars that are driven daily by owners who don't understand the steps to proper turbo care.

I've seen Mitsu TD05/TD06 and Garrett T3 center housings both with and without the water line provision....it all depends on whether the turbo in question came factory on a specific car or not. I've also seen guys run turbos that had water line provisions without water lines, and they were fine.

Coolant lines are REQUIRED on ball-bearing turbos in order to keep oil from burning and sticking to the delicate ball bearings. If you have a ball-bearing turbo on your car, you MUST hook up the water lines.

So? Designed that way or not you can still run it without coolant lines. Close friends of mine have thousands of miles on their 16g's and 20g's with no coolant lines installed. A turbo timer has it's use.

Or they could hook it up the right way and never half to worry about it. read the above post.

I cannot see a single logical reason to not run the water lines. They are ther for a reason and while you could probably get away with it, as others have it just seems like a dumb thing to do with a part that is vital to the over all power train. It's designed for water, give it water.

^^^^^
I agree

I guess im not a noob. Makes sense to use the water lines since the FACTORY put it on there. Thats like saying "hey, lets not use the turbo EVEN THOUGH the factory put it on there."

Get it? Good luck

Turbo Timer + changing oil more frequently than needed = more money
Water Lines + NOT changing oil more frequently = less money

Any more Questions?

Plus is it THAT much cooler to Not run Water Lines?? Because if it is, im going to remove mine right now in the parking lot. :notgood:

Just because you can do something doesn't meen you should, I say do it the way it's designed and you won't have to worry about it. You wouldn't believe how many people destroy stuff or waste time trying to do stuff a different way when they could of just done it the way it's made and been fine.

Listen, you guys are blowing this shit way out of proportion. The OP asked a simple question and guess what? We gave him a simple answer. My 16g is water fed right now so it's not like I have a vendetta against hooking up the water lines. I'm done.

I have a Greddy 18g and they only have an oil line. It should be fine. Just turbo time it religously. But if I were you, I would put the coolant line. It's not that hard to put on. Are you going to remove your turbo every month? I doubt it so just put it on.

I have an Big 16G just put on my car (amongst the rest of the mods listed in my profile). The inlet and outlet coolant lines are showing signs of leakage even before I have even kicked the car over.

Now, this is going to be my winter driver here in Chicago, so for the next 3 or so months, the air temp outside will be under 50 degrees. I don't a front mount oil cooler as of yet, but will probably put one on in the months to come, once it gets warmer out.

I do have a turbo timer going on the car probably tomorrow, and wondering how badly are the coolant lines off the turbo needed? Also, can I just delete the lines, and loop them with the existing setup without problems?

technically you could be but why not just buy new lines? they aren't that expensive and you'll have the confidence your turbo will last as long as it's supposed to.

I wasn't having that much luck finding the correct lines for the turbo I have, and don't have the money or time waiting for the lines to come in. Looking at it a couple of minutes ago, I'll just pull the turbo off, and use a little (I mean a LITTLE) high temp RTV in the spots that are bothering me.

EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - Manual turbo was made to have them lines,If your gonna do it,Do it the right way,Trust me i know a 105 dollar set of coolant lines and banjo bolts from slowboyracing headed to my house for my 16g set up,^^^^ they got them way cheaper if you just want a cheap set but Its your choice it is possible but not recommended or good for the turbo,If you got a nice turbo you'll be very mad if it goes on you because you didn't buy them stupid coolant lines:toobad:

I had no coolant lines for my 14b. ran it for around 5-6 months like that. It was fine. Turbo was fine when I took it off.
No smoke, no shaft play, boosted fine.
