I bought my 97 gsx as a project car and the previous owners didn’t put on the water pump pulleys. I bought the 2 pulleys needed but the clearance seems to be too small of a gap. You can’t get the pulleys in there so I assume I have to jack up the engine to get them on? Does this gap look correct or is something wrong?

Picture of water pump and PS pump pulleys???

Looks about right. Yes, if I were you I'd unbolt the mounts and use a jack to tip or drop the engine so you can get the pulley on and bolted up securely.

I unbolt the motor mount and jack it up slightly. Can’t tell for sure but it looks like you don’t have an alignment pin in the water pump. You are going to have fun trying line them two pulleys up and put a bolt in with that in tight clearance. Worst part of a timing job IMO.

Also if it’s aftermarket pulley that is a one piece design I don’t think you’ll have enough clearance with the motor in the car.

This is a frustration I have had before. I prefer to support the engine from the bottom, so that the driver side motor mount can be removed, giving you WAY more access to the WP. I take the two pulley, making sure to put them together in the correct orientation, and slide a small Allen wrench through one of the bolt holes to align them. Fit the pulley together onto the pump, with the Allen wrench fitting into one of the bolt holes on the pump. This should allow you to put a starting bolt into another of the holes and snug it down hand tight.

I feel like something is off, maybe wrong motor mounts or water pump. The only way they would get in there is by lifting the engine up. Bought the pulleys from stm tuned

Right now I'm struggling to remove my water pump pully as well but mine an after market one piece..

And iv move top motor Mont and un bolted the bottom motor Mont

Still struggling to get it off ..

I loosend the alternator and power steering

Still struggling to remove pullys

It’s best to remove the driver side engine Mount and slowly adjust the height of the engine where you can slide I. The smaller pulley the. The bigger one on top. I’ve been I. That position a lot with my old 2g and that’s what I did every time.

Remove the four mounting solutions on the motor Mount and work on finessing the pulleys on.

Aftermarket one piece don’t have clearance needed for removal. I learned that the hard way when I assembled my motor. Once installed in the car the need for water pump pulley to come off happened. Couldn’t get it off. Left it in until I pulled the motor. Threw it out and installed oem one.

For me it not that easy since I don't OEM pully that a two piece.. the one I have is an aftermarket chrome pully that a solid one piece..
