1G Put in new trans and now won't go into 5th or reverse

I just put my new trans, clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate in and at first it would go into reverse and then got stuck in 5th and when I pulled it out of 5th it wouldn't go in 5th and reverse anymore(this was all before I had started the car yet)... It goes into all the other gears fine, but it feels like when I move the shifter side to side it binds slightly and if I put it all the way over like I'm going into 5th or reverse it goes into 4th or 3rd.. Help?

Kinda dumb, but make sure that there isnt anything obstructing the shifter linkage in the bay.

I installed my new tranny last week and experienced the same exact discrepancy. My side to side adjustment was off. My cable operated smoothly when disconnected from the tranny. It was a simple adjustment on the cable and clutch that fixed it. Good luck

Adjusting them where? Sounds like I do need to adjust my clutch rod though, the engaging point is pretty far off the floor.

Ok so my side to side is off and it needs to be more to the left, how would that be accomplished?

Ok well today I pulled everything out of the way and tried manually changing the gears from the shift forks for shits and giggles, well my transmission literally just isn't going into 5th or reverse and I have no clue why when I haven't even driven on it yet and it was working fine before..

Make sure the transmission is able to switch to 5th and reverse. To put it reverse, simply lift the selector lever up and rotate towards the front of the car. Rotate the opposite direction to shift to 5th gear. Do you understand the adjustment procedures in vfaq?

I know how to make the car go into 5th and reverse manually from the shift work, it literally will not go into gear when I try doing it manually.

I don't understand why my reply was posted today instead of yesterday. Anyhow, it looks like you isolated you problem to the transmission. We need a transmission builder to give you further guidance. I'm just curious, are you using a twin disc gear drive clutch?

Got it fixed, the 5th/R shift fork was stuck and the 36mm bolt was loose, torqued the bolt and lubed everything with tranny fluid and put fresh fluid in and I'm good.

Hmmmmm, you saying a bolt was loose worries me. My new Trans won't go into 5th but goes into R manually out of the car. No fluid in it either. I will be calling shep because I would hate to have to remove this Trans right after I finished installing it.

There are two 36mm nuts inside the end cover. I think he meant one of those nuts was loose, not a bolt.

Aw man. So that means taking the trans back out eh? It's just odd. The shifter seems much further to the right then it did with the previous trans. So it's almost like I can't move the shifter far enough to the right to get to 5th or reverse. And I literally can't move it to the left. It's like hitting a wall. No jiggle at all

The end cover & nuts can be accessed without removing the tranny. Just need to take the wheel off & remove the plastic splash shield.

No but you better drain the oil out first or you'll have a mess. And lock the shafts together to hold them to tighten those 36mm nuts (otherwise you'll never hold them solid enough) and then stake them (notice how nuts are staked to prevent nuts coming loose): https://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/5th-gear-shift-inside-tranny.480233/#post-153435439.

Man this is all so Greek to me. I'm not sure how to lock shafts and whatnot. I can definitely check out the lever shoes for sure and measure them but man the other part. I hate being new to this stuff especially when this is my daily I'm potential about the screw up haha

Also make sure the shifter cable casings aren't moving around when shifting which will cause those problems. Have someone shift while you watch under the hood. To hold shafts, if you can't lock tranny into 2 gears at once, try holding the other 36mm nut while tightening this one with a torque wrench. It won't hold the shafts as solid while tightening but may get you by. Make sure you stake the nut to prevent it from coming loose (https://www.dsmtuners.com/attachments/reverse-syncro-new-on-5th-gear-slider-jpg.226616/). Use gasket sealer on cover upon re-assembly.

Here's what 5th gear/fork looks like in the FWD tranny with the 36mm nut removed (you'll see under that end cover).

There’s a sprung washer that goes between the case and 5th gear. That’s the only thing you have to worry about when you remove the cover. It usually stays with the cover when you remove it. Just make sure it’s orientated correctly on install. IIRC there are two notches on the washer.

The cover has a few dowel pins. If you look closely at the cover, you’ll see a few spots where you can use a flat head and gently tap with a hammer to get the cover off. Just work it back and forth.

Yes that sprung washer is called the reverse wave spring. Here's a pic of it. Notice the way it fits and don't lose it. As TK says it normally stays on what's called the reverse brake cone part of the cover however it can fall off.

You guys forgot about the reverse synchro. It's the whole reason the wavy washer exists. Yes it can fall out but its no big deal. You will have to drain the trans and refill.
