its a 97 talon tsi awd..little over 50k on the car..it is babied and the transmission has not been abused. After this weekend and some fast highway driving i lost 5th and reverse..I cannot shift into those gears..even if the car is off or running it will not let me get into those gears. It does not leak any fluid and there are no holes in the transmission..and also 1-4 work fine just 5th and reverse. Any ideas on what to check for?

I would try looking under the hood at the tranny where the shift cables go into the tranny. Pop out the pins, disconnect the shift cables from it and shift it by hand into 5th. Then see if the shift cables can reach to where they are supposed to be. If they cant then you need to adjust the length of the shift cables. Eithor under the shifter inside the car or by adjusting the bracket on the tranny that holds the shift cables.

sorry if this doesnt work, im going by my 1 G.....hopefully it helps man

happened to a friend of mine, somehow a bushing got stuck in between the shiftboot base somehwere and wouldnt let him into the same gears

when you try to shift it manually by the tranny it will go into 5th with persuasion but reverse will not go in at all. It feels like that gear is just not there.
