so theroreticly, if your ildler gear was bad, when the engine is off,you should be able to put it in reverse still when the engine is off with a bad idler gear. Because I cant get this cars reverse into gear after the bolts off the linkage brackets fell off and when it was bolted bakcin reverse didnt work, it wont go in when the car is off either. It doesnt grind or anything ever just doesnt go in gear, I havnt really tried to force it, and I havnt tryed to put it in gear on the transmsion its self. I am just trying to get to the bottom of that, because I am about to buy this car.

Try putting it into 1st then into reverse, i know alot of dsm's that grind reverse and usually going into 1st beforehand helps out alot.

like I said itdoesnt grind or anything, I have done tons of searching on this. I have been doing the 1st gear trick on my last cars.

turned out to be a minor adjustment of the side to side shifting likage.

Ok, thanks a lot!!! I will try to do that as well.
Just for the records (the next person asking how to adjust it)
vfaq>shifter>shifter adjustment on a 1G.

But for now I won't be able to go in reverse! :thumbdown
Later,

try this, it works for me, while trying to get into reverse let it roll backward slowly a lil

For ME it didn't work in that way.
The shifter brackets( were the links lay down) on the tranny were a little out of place. I moved a little bit to the back(toward the car). An I noticed it was out of place we tight it down and perfect. But at the same time I notice that those rubber were busted and I might need to get a new ones. Otherwise the bracket might be getting out of place again someday. :thumbdown

BTW it shift great!! :D

I once had the same problem.... i found that if you let the clutch out a little bit and slip it into reverse it works!!! ;)
