I have a 1990 talon with a Galant tranny, but i blew the shift fork off its bracket (im guessing) my car will shift into every gear but when I go to 3rd and 4th gear it doesnt catch anything. It will sit in the position but since the fork isnt there, it doesnt shirt it into 3rd or 4th. Im pretty sure u blew ur shirt fork like I did...hope that helps

I just recently ran into the same problem with my transmission, when I started tearing it apart I had pieces of synchro rings fall out of the case itself. Plus from what I can understand from my shop manual, the reverse brake cone is on the end of the input shaft under the rear housing cover, which is where the 5th gear assembly is, I posted some photos of these parts in my transmission Here

The gear for 5th should have 3 spring retainers and 2 synchronizer springs, mine was missing both springs and 2 of the retainers as you can see in the 3rd photo, the last photo shows the reverse brake cone... Hope this can be of some help to you, but like Louis said, it can also be a shift fork, but you won't know till you tear it apart.

It could be a couple things. The first things which is the easiest.

Check to make sure your linkage is hooked up to the tranny. I had the same problem, and it had just came loose.
