Project Superman: '90 Talon - building my first drag race car

I was thinking about going with CF parts but after seeing how easy some of that stuff cracks I didn't want to have to worry about that while driving on the street. Looks great though and should set off the outside of your car real nice.

Thanks

I am building a pretty similar project to yours.
I have read thru your thread and its awesome.
My car is a 91 talon awd auto. So far have stripped it down a lot ,no air, cruise, abs, no back bumper support, front bumper support is jm fab. Have removed front and rear sway bars, run only megan downpipe for exhaust. Interior gutted of course but so far keeping possibly front door panels, dash and center console.
For fuel running jm fab fuel tank, FFWD fuel system with sx adjustable reg, billet filter, stainless lines and 1150 FIC injectors, supra tt pump.
Cooling is mitsumoto? rad and aluminum shroud dual fan kit. Jm fab intake with nitrous bungs if want to go spray later.
Jm fab coolant overflow and jm fab catch can.
For brakes running 2g conversion with powerslot rotors and kvr pads, stainless lines.
For suspension running kyb agx shocks with hopefully eibach pro springs. They are discontinued so having bit of time getting some .
For tuning run dsmlink will upgrade to newest version be running 3 bar for now ,speed density ,open loop. I have a lot of experience tuning fi cars both dsms and my v8 cars.
Interior have corbeau forza wide , comp engineering 8 point and will have to get myself a belt.
For electronics have aem boost controller and aem wideband, autometer in car fuel pressure and egt.
Planning on shift kit, end clutch kit , welded center diff and upgraded stock stall. Will see how long stock trans lasts they are supposed to be pretty tough. May try out tcu reprogram so don't have to manually shift at all.
For rims think running some light konigs and not sure on tire..16 by 7 rim size.
Plan on big ets intercooler have one on my 97 talon.
For engine likely run my current built 2.4 from my 97. Its got crower rods, wiseco 8.8s,bc 280s,fluidampr,stainless stock valves.Nothing fancy for headwork.
For turbo likely going to run fp 3065, 3575 one of those with 3575 looking to be top choice.
Simple dont' need BB with an auto really. Was going to move the FP3065 from my 97 but think keep it on there now.
May try to set new record with 13g, 14b, evo big 16 first just for fun.
Be running tial 44 and tial bov. fp manifold. fp 2.5 inch o2 housing.
Hoping to have car think around 2500 empty about 2750 raceweight .I weigh 250.

My car is trackable with the 13g pretty much anytime as most all those mods above are in there except for new engine, shocks and springs and the trans upgrades and the fmic and mags and tires.
But most of that will be in there over next few months just not sure when swapping engine and which turbo will be running this season.

I am hoping to run 10s and no interest ever in running 9s. Too much headache for 9s at most tracks around here .I might try to sneak one thru at few outlaw tracks but its not my goal really.

Future plans could possibly include cf hood, maybe lighter hatch and back hatch glass. Don't think need to lighten that much more to get my goals of 10s. Also going to manual rack.

Anyway fun projects we have going on. My car is total track car never going to be driven on public road. Thats good in that don't have to compromise like do on street car. I have couple of crazy street cars too. My done up 97 and have totally nuts 99 trans am twin turbo with over 1700 hp potential with turbos and spray at max power. So far have not pushed it past 750 engine hp or so. Plenty scary on the street. Hard to beat v8 torque . But our high revving dsms are fun too.

I was just relating to this build and giving my comparison mods. I purposely didn't post pics so would not be seen as a hijack. Sorry that was not my intention. Will post a separate thread about my 91 shortly when have a bit more finished up or maybe get some track results in a few weeks.

Just showing there are a few different ways of doing things and maybe super could get a few ideas from me or me from him. Like had no clue anyone made fiberglass doors for the 1gs.

Again superman sorry if this seems like a thread hijack.

We understand, its just was so much about you and slightly any comparision in the builds since it was mostly you talking about what you have or gonna do.

That's cool man. Keep up the good work. Keep me posted

I wanted the doors also but my car is gonna see more street than track so CF hood is enough for me for now. I do love them doors tho.

Thanks man. They're a lot stronger than I thought. They look like they can take a hit and bounce back. They are super light. This should shed some serious weight. Hopefully less broken parts.

I had considered those doors but have not seen anyone with them on a talon. Do they allow you to attach the stock lower door trim to match the rest of the car? Its hard to tell but it does not seem to have been molded with the trim already on there.

I think you can. I intend on wrapping the trim to match the doors.

Ok guys, I was finally able to remove all the bushings. The trailing arm bushings are the most difficult to remove in my opinion. You have to remove the bolt that is located towards the bushing. You then have to burn the bushing out. Try to aim the fire into the arm itself. The bushing is actually a steel rod that is surrounding by rubber. You have to burn the rubber off and then pull the rod out. This part takes a lot of heat. Once everything was removed I packed up the parts and took them to JM Fab to have the toe eliminator install and box the control arms and rear diff brace.

I also picked up some used Megan coilovers I found on sale in the classifieds for cheap. I know I am going to have to upgrade the rear springs. What spring rate do you guys recommend for the rears?

Ok guys, Just want to get your recommendations for tires. I have been doing some research and it looks like the popular brands are Hoosier QTP and Mickey Thompson in a 26 inch tall tire. Let me know what you think

Ok guys, I got the suspension parts back from JMF and I must say I am very impressed with their work. I asked Jim to reinforce the control arms and rear diff brace. They don't normally do things like this, but they did a great job. Everything came out great. They also installed the toe kit for me. These guys do great work. JMF will be doing all the welding for this project. The suspension part of this build is almost done. Now all I have to do is clean everything up, install the poly bushings, paint and re-install everything. Should be fun.

Hey guys, bought some parts recently. I will post some pics shortly. I will be switching over to the build blog as well to for all future updates. I just wanted to get your opinion on spring rates for the suspension. For a car that might end up weighing 2700lbs, would a 350lb front spring and a 600lb to 800lb rear spring be sufficient?

can you post a link here to your build blog? I'm not too familiar with the blog section but i love reading updates about your drag car. :D

The build goes on. The last time I posted an update I was still working on the poly bushings. I was also waiting for JMF to take the car and put the cage in. Jim couldn't install the cage due to their work load, so he referred me to Natedog Creations. I contacted Nate regarding the cage and he said he would take the job, but I would have to wait 3-4 months. That was fine with me because I was still working on the bushings at the time. Three months came and went and I got an email from Nate regarding dropping off the car. At the time when I got the email from Nate, the car was still on jack stands with both sub frames removed.

I didn't want to miss my appointment so I took some days off work and got the car back together. I installed all the Poly bushings (except for the rear lower control arms), added new ball joints, and painted everything up as best as I could just to get the car back together.

I had to buy some new rear upper control arms because the DME camber kits are not available. So I just picked up some 3SX adjustable arms.
DSC00570.jpg

Also picked up carbon fiber hood and hatch for more weight savings.

I got everything together, loaded the car on the trailer and headed out to Nate's shop (more pics to come).

Today, I took a trip out to Nate Dog Creations to look at the cage. This guy can really build a cage. His work far exceeded my expectations. All the welds look good. He installed the windshield brace (for the lexan glass), windows nets, parachute mount, cable and handle. The cage looks great. Also sat in the car to see how much room I had. The seating position was a little too high so he is going to adjust the seat to fit me better. Things are really coming together with this project. I spoke to him about possibly removing the factory rear setup and going with a solid rear diff. He said he would look into it and let me know. I will keep you guys posted.
