Playing w/ my EVO on the Dyno - 550 AWHP Pump gas HY35

To be frank with you, wheel horsepower is where it matters.
No, it's not. We already know dyno numbers can be manipulated and vary by dyno brand. The only way a dyno is truly accurate is when you compare two setups on the same dyno- in this case we have two HY35 setups on the same dyno which made almost the same horsepower.
Who cares what size wheel?
Because smaller turbos spool quicker. Sure a S366 could make 550whp at 28-30psi, but it's going to be a lag-monster. The HY35 compressor inducer is just 1.5mm larger than a 20G...the same as FP's DSM Green.
Is that really something to brag about with the boys? "Well I made more power with a smaller comp wheel!"
Sure is. Wouldn't you feel like shit if your buddy with an Evo III 16G made more power than your 20G at the same boost level? I know if I saw my name on a dyno rankings list next to guys running turbos with 10mm+ larger compressor wheels I'd sure feel like I was doing something right.
That dyno graph is laggy. As said before, outside of price, nothing special about this.
We've already noted that the RPM numbers on the dyno chart are calculated in case you missed the discussion. Come ride in the car if you want- I promise it's not laggy and will likely outspool a TD06 20G.

All Ricky's saying here is that we now have two HY35 turbos- one on an Evo with a stock engine and one on a DSM with a built engine....which made roughly the same horsepower numbers on pump gas on the same dyno despite the Evo running a slightly higher boost level than the DSM.

For those who think it requires timeslip data to back up results- this same compressor wheel has gone 10.1 on Peepers' DSM, putting a tiny little 54mm turbo into a territory of turbos with much greater potential.

It's more your problem than mine if that's what popped to mind after what.. 2-3 years? I didn't even participate in the dogpile. I don't dislike you, I "nothing" you but it appears this is a sort of routine response you have.. to lash out. You'll do it to the wrong person soon enough.

Home from vacation ill post a clip from the ecmlink log... Its nothing special i was just happy with power It produced... It ran 11.1 on street tires and less boost driving nearly 2 hours to and from the track ... And it is a full weight car.. I am totally happy with it and it runs on 93 to boot :)

Full boost just a bit after 4K and good power all the way to 8k with small cams and a shitty intake.

I said wheel horsepower. Not dyno power. As in power to the ground. 300 ft lbs of torque at 5k is laggy. I don't care if it made 30psi at 2500rpm. If there is no power to the wheels, its not moving. Internet drag racers might like it, but it won't be a fun street car.

Thanks for picking on my DSM that I sold 4 years ago. Its probably crushed by now. My 370z doesn't have any lag to worry about.

And you're right. My 20g was laggy. The setup I had really didnt' get going until after 4.5k. I still spooled 20psi by 3800, but doesn't mean peak torque was that early in the rev range. The 20g on my evo 8 was nearly instant with peak torque hitting at 4000rpm. (378ft lbs) Full weight running mid 11's on 93. Twin scroll FTW.

Says the guy who goes 114mph.... Last time I checked, a dsm was 2.0l, and did not have a big block under the hood. I don't know what your driving, but even a stock turbo dsm has no low end torque. A turbo that can make enough power to propel a 3400lb car to 130+mph in the 1/4 yet makes full boost by 4200rpm is doing pretty damn good, no matter what it costs.

Lag and torque are what make a car fun, or not. A GTX30R can do the same that you say, but we all don't splurge our pants when it happens like some do when a Holset does. The bottom line is price vs outcome. In the real world at least. I'm sorry if my opinion doesn't equal yours. I don't want to clutter the OP's thread.

And I apologize to the OP for not giving him props. 500whp is great. I'm just not a fan of the lag.

That's incredible for that turbo on pump. Now I know why many people think dsm'ers are idiots.
 
People think DSMer's are idiots because of the hacked up cars we drive. DSM's are like sluts. Go fast with no class.
That would be f*cking hilarious if the car in question were actually a DSM....but it's not. :D

Nice numbers.. Pretty similar setup to our Evo 8 last year.. ECMLink V3 HX35 14cm^2 twinscroll FF Manifold, Stock block, E85 @ 30psi we ran a best of a 10.8 @133 with a horrible 60ft 2.1. We now have a 2.4LR with a modified stock Evo 8 turbo trying to make 500WHP on it :)
 
Wow a lot of useless arguments here without a real answer. Saying that rpms were calculated of roller speed does not explain the HP drop at higher rpms. Regardless of the engine rpm the dyno graph shows substantial HP drop. My question was what's the reason for that? Was it because the valve were floating? Maybe the exhaust is not big enough for 500 HP therefore causing way to much back pressure after the turbo or was it the fact that the wastegate was completely closes and all of the exhaust was forced thru that 9cm housing which would eventually be over ran. Sure the car made great power and torque but looking at the graph something was holding it back at higher rpms.

If you look at any dyno graph HP and torque almost 100% of the time cross right at 5250 rpms. Looking at the OP's dyno graph that is the case so I would say rpms in that graph are relatively close to the actual rpms.

I wonder if there is enough hateraid to go around on this thread, too bad im not thirsty. Aside from all the debates and arguments that dont really mean anything other then wanting to argue a point. The fact remains he made 550whp on a stock bottom end and drives it everyday on a turbo that was designed for a truck, on pump gas. Lets think about that for a second.... He is one guy doing this in his garage,tuning his own car, and laying down power numbers beyond a lot people with more money invested into the same platform. If anything the people in the forum should think this is awesome because its not a big name shop. This is a statement and a testament to all of us that others can do the same thing or similar and gives the little guy a fighting chance who maybe doesnt have 1200$ to spend on a turbo that does the same thing.


I like many others in this forum have known ricky for a long time and I can tell you he doesnt build anything for himself that is a lag monster or on off switch type turbo. Everything I have ever rode in of his has been nasty throught the powerband. If anyone can find a turbo that makes 30lbs of boost at 100 rpm on a 4g63t let me know.

If you look at any dyno graph HP and torque almost 100% of the time cross right at 5250 rpms. Looking at the OP's dyno graph that is the case so I would say rpms in that graph are relatively close to the actual rpms.

The drop in power is due to the way the dyno smooths the curve.

HP = Torque(ft*lbs) at 5252 by definition. The way the dyno records the data masks the fact that the engine rpm is not what is being reported.

So therefore you see a power drop b/c the clutch was pushed in and the car continued to roll on the rollers. For that split second the calculated rpm continued to climb due to wheel speed but power dropped due to clutch disengagement until I could hit the end button. That's the reason for the drop off.

Yeah that makes sense but I don't know that because I wasn't there. I'm not picking on the setup, I was just thinking if there was a problem what could be done to fix it. I'm always looking for ways to improve something and not just criticize. What was the actual engine rpm when you let off the throttle?
