Painting A FMIC Flat Black intercooler paint ic [Merged 12-6]

I fail to see how anodizing will "hurt" the intercooler in any way. I can see if the paint is put on in thick coats it could actually insulate the heat, but not anodizing.

I was not trying to say in my post anodizing it was bad, just that it still seems to be a debate on whether or not it will hurt it. If you are going to spend the money to have it anodized why not just get something done that will definitely not hurt it and possibly even help like a ceramic dissipating coating.

I know a couple arguments are against this but I from what we have always been taught is that the reason color is what it is is due to light absorption/reflection. Kind of like the definition that was given about emitters. Black absorbs most light and reflects little back which in turns makes it hotter since light transfers to warmth. So it seems to me that polishing would be the best since this causes a reflective surface which obviously reflects light and heat. But your experiment shows otherwise, I can only assume there must have other factors that went into this like thickness of the can material ... smoothness of surfaces since the molecules would disapate better and more evenly with a smooth surface or a surface that the cans were placed on that may have been assisting disapation as well.

Again this was what I have obtained from education and experiences with colors and the like. Im going to be either painting or polishing my IC soon, I expect very little change in effectiveness.

If Im wrong then set me right. ;)

I read in a mag awhile ago that did an article on sleeper products and one of them was a black coating on the intercooler that helped disapate the heat. Wish I could find it now. Yes black will heat up faster if in direct sunlight but since its not in the case of IC and radiators then it sould not be a factor. And maybe factory products are black for corosion resistance. Road salt does nasty things to aluminum.

A few years ago, Spearco did a test with intercooler efficiency between different coatings. The verdict was that radiator paint will not hamper the intercooler's ability to cool as long as it's a thin coat.

I also believe that Spearco make an actual intercooler paint...

You are correct that a shiny surface will reflect heat. The problem is that it will reflect the heat back into the intercooler. Heat wants to go to a cooler place. The heat in the intercooler wants to get out into the ambeint air. If you intercooler is polished it will hamper that heat transfer because it will reflect that heat back into the core it self.

Alright,

I'm no expert, but I think the aluminum fins within the intercooler are where the heat exchange actualy happens. I don't think it will mater much what color (hot pink for example) you paint the front face of the intercooler as the actual metal surface area is so small in comparison to the fin area. As long as you don't paint shut the fins or restrict flow through the core I think you'll be OK.

Thats why most people say to anodize it. Anodizong is an electrical process that will cover the entire area of the intercooler not just the front. The paint will get into the fins but not very well. That is another reason it is not the best way if you decide to change the color.

Hey everyone my name is AJ im from new york.. I just recently bought a 92' Eagle Talon TSi AWD Turbo 5 speed, silver, mint condition besides some paint chips on hood from previous owner leaving it on the side of his house an snow/ice crushing down on it.. but for what i paid i got a steal, all it needed was a clutch/tune up.. Ive had it for about 2weeks an im an old honda freak so im new to the DSM world but learning a lot everyday, no more slow cars for me tired of the whole body kit/big wheels/loud systems-exhaust world.. Moved onto better things.. heres what my talon has so far ive been going on the STAGE1 LIST on this website..

Pro Clutch Stage 3 (6 puck) Clutch
TurboXS Manual Boost Controller
Upper Intercooler Pipe 2.5" w/ custom 1g bov flange
Pacesetter Turbo Manifold
Autometer Boost Gauge
JVC Deck w/ Pioneer Interior Speakers
COMING THIS WEEK:
Slowboyz Racing Radio Bezel Gauge Pod (for 3 gauges..im getting a EGT/A-F soon)
Intake Pipe w/ K&N Filter (MAF alredy hacked)
Grounding Wires (still iffy about this i saw it done an was told its a decent upgrade i dont kno what goes where tho.)
new front struts/rotors/pads (alredy did the rear struts so now the front needs it an new brakes an its all set to go..did a full tune up also)

PROBLEMS:
Speedometer doesnt work.. it works but the needle goes below zero for some reason an is about 30-40mph off.. it says im doin 65 but i passed my friends S10 Xtreme with ease an he was pinned at 100.. so im guessing 40mph off? i dunno.. but i need to figure something out..
Idle is jumpy.. it goes from 1500-1100 i was told the BISS screws o-rings are bad?
Fuel cut?.. when im at 13psi around 5krpms it feels like a revlimiter so im guessing thats the fuel cutting? i dunno i was told its fuelcut not sure tho.. i turned my psi to 9 now an it doesnt do it..

WINTER PLANS:
Rebuild the 4G63 w/ stock internals (its got 157k on it now..will have well over 170k by the time winter comes so i want a fresh rebuild).. but get a balance shaft eliminator? i was told thats all it truly needs internally.. then get a big16g,injectors,SAFC,datalogger,FMIC (stage 2 list) then im all set to go.. rite now just concentrating on finishing the stage1 list.. after this week all ill need is Fuel Pump(walbro 255), o2housing(porting stock one), downpipe-catback ill get either custom made or somewheres online..oh and progress springs for a 2" clean drop on 17" ICON black 5spoke wheels (hopefully..if my friend still has them for sale..they looked amazing on my car oh an w/ pirelli p7000 215/40/17 tires brand new an the rims are mint not a scratch)..

Thats it really.. ill have pics soon.. i love this car, oh also its a 6BOLT block.. cant wait to finish it..hopeing for low 12s next spring :)

I've never experienced fuel cut myself, but from what others have posted on here, they say it sounds horrible, because everything stops in the car. It'd be like stalling and starting against instantly ... definitely doesn't sound pretty to me.

About idle, all I had to do was clean out my ISC (Idle Speed Controller, it's the yellowish connector below your TB with 6 prongs) and then adjust my idle, and everything was great. It's actually a little messed up again, but that's because I put in an other power transistor.

The speedometer problem may be in the gauge cluster. You can try taking it off and making sure the gauges are set correctly.

I hope something I mentioned works for you, good luck and most of all, have fun.

Fuel cut makes a shotgun sound, and feels like you hit a brick wall, if only for a split second.

Good luck with that Pacesetter manifold, as people have reported them cracking.

I wouldn't buy those grounding wires. The money can be better spent elsewhere.

Instead of getting that A/F gauge, get a pocketlogger, or something a bit more useful.

Good luck, and welcome.

well im looking for a 2g Manifold and then port it.. this pacesetter was a quick fix cause my 1g one was cracked down the center an i need a manifold to get to work.. i have grounding wires from extra system wires (8GA power wire).. is that ok or nah? also i need to get another gauge since ill have boost/EGT so i decided on an A/F gauge.. i am getting the pocketlogger very soon tho its on my list :)

You never said DSM specific, but this one is pretty bad ass.

you are my idol!, we have the same car, mines a 93, but still 6 bolt. I want a black anodized fmic as well :thumb: thank you threadstarter :thumb:

I would like it anodized like the impreza though, it looks darker.

looks painted, not anodized.

Painted is going to hurt cooling abilities. Now if you can get someone to actually anodize your intercooler black, that would be bad ass. Find some anodizing companies and see about pricing.

I dont get how painting ur fmic would affect ur cooling capabilities

i would just lightly spray some black on the front of it, just to hide it a little, to where its not so obvius unless i told you to look there.

You're putting a layer of paint, with poor heat transferring abilities, between your intercooler and the outside air.

Actually, depending on the type of paint you use, you can actually increase cooling efficiency with a painted fmic. Some paints will help disperse the heat away from the IC thus increasing the IC's efficiency.

yeah i dunno...My FMIC has a silver spray paint on it and works fine to me..I dunno i doubt paintin ur FMIC has that much affect on ur FMIC if any at all..
