Painting A FMIC Flat Black intercooler paint ic [Merged 12-6]

the whole color absorbtion rate is only for things that are expossed to direct sunlight. its not a problem at all unless the sun is going down (in which case, the rays will not be strong) and it were to shine under ur bumper, onto your IC....so bascially its not a problem.

The color absorption rate applies to all radiant forms of energy, not just direct sunlight (put a hot brick between a white & a black container of water and see which heats up faster). Intercooler heat soak is more an issue of conduction and convection, which rely on the material's properties and the environment for heat transfer.

Or go play ball with one white one black sock on and see which foot stinks worse :p

still not enuf to effect much of anything

don't really know much about this subject, but a question came up when i was reading this thread. doesn't painting you're block black, help your engine radiate heat? if that's so, wouldn't it help you're intercooler out (take out the sun in the last question, just to eliminate a variable). hope my question makes sense.

Any dark color will absrob heat more. You don't have to be in direct sunlight. Put a black shirt on during a hot day. Go stand in a place that has shade but is right next to sunlight. You will be hotter then if you had a light shirt on. I think we all would have learned this in physical science or something. It's not just sunlight but heat that dark colors attract. Another consideration is that if you arent careful and put too much paint on it, that will make it more difficult for the intercooler to do its job. Just get over the "bling" factor as you call it and get your moneys worth with the FMIC. If you want to go fast, you want efficiency, it will become your best friend. The most efficient intercooler is the way it comes from the dealer. If it made more sense to powdercoat it black, they would have done that in the factory.
I DO like the idea of the sleeper effect with the FMIC black, but personally I wouldn't do it for that reason alone. I might, however, paint a black :dsm: logo on it just for fun. hehe :p

Regards,
Brian

Even the thinnest layer of paint or powdercoat is gonna act as a thin layer of insulation, reducing the effectiveness of the intercooler. Granted, it's not gonna make a huge difference, but still, i wouldnt do it.

Actually, the colour affects the rate of heat transfer, not absorption.

A hot black object will radiate more heat than a hot silver object, all other things being equal. Heatsinks for electronic components are often anodized black, and I've yet to meet one that's quoted as having different thermal characteristics from an unanodized one.

I have an starion intercooler and the fins don't look so good and I was wondering if they could be painted witn any major efficiency lost of the intercooler.

I would suspect that the thermal properties of paint (depends on what paint you use) could interfere with the cooling properties of the metal, the same way as it coats and protects it from corrosion. But one thing is for sure, I had never seen an aluminum intercooler or a radiator painted all the way

Some intercoolers have their fins painted with SPEARCO on them so a little might not hurt.

There was an article posted on here about paint and thermal properties. I think there were paints that can aid in the heat transfer from the core as opposed to ceramic paint that holds heat in.

It's like those blue, gold, pink, red, orange or green aluminum keys you see on the blanks rack. It's _kind_ of a "plating" for aluminum, but it's not just a layer on top, it gets down into the metal, and is done electrolytically.

is it a good idea to paint a fmic black. I live inb an area where theft is big especially if people think you have anything. I dont want to paint it to the max if you know what i mean just a glaze. Will this hurt cooling abilities.

That and does anyone know how to post on honda-tech. It wont let me. Dsms need a little defending on that site:D . It wont let me post or anything. i think they know:rolleyes:

I called a good radiator shop and asked them if they had any special black paint to spray on my intercooler. The owner said to just use cheap water based paint. Your only going to spray the front of the fins and end tanks anyway.
