I have a 97 GS-T with 167k miles. I have some money to spend, and am looking for about 350whp. My current mods are:

FP Big T-28 turbo
ADFX Racing FMIC with short route piping.
Greddy Type S bov
Joe P MBC
Injen Intake
Punishment Racing O2 dump
Bomz Racing 3" cat-eliminator downpipe
3" after downpipe exhaust
Matrix Type X Muffler
FIC 550cc injectors
Chipped 95 eprom ecu with stutterfbox
Tubular exhaust Manifold
Re-wired Walbro 190 fuel pump
NGK BPR6ES plugs
NGK 7mm plug wires
6 puck Zoom clutch
Poly motor mounts

I have about $2K to spend, and here is what I was thinking of getting:

Wiseco pistons/Eagle Rods
Refised lifters
272 cams
Arp Studs
1mm oversized valves
Port and polish heads with valve job
Aftermarket springs/retainers

Just wondering if this might be too much? Maybe just build the head and redo the bottom end stock?

if your just looking for the 350 range i wouldnt even think about doing internals. doing the head isnt a bad idea. i would just go with a bigger turbo than the t-28 with better fuel mods!:thumb:

Refised lifters
272 cams
Arp Studs

This is what you would want and some bigger injectors. Safc or dsmlink if you don't have it.

If your going to redo the bottom end you can do it stock and eliminate the balance shaft. That should be all you need.

Yeah for the $700-$800 your going to spend on rods and pistons its really not worth it if your goals are 350hp. The stock bottom end will support 450-500 hp. I would just stick with the stock bottom end and build the head, and stick the left over money into some more bolt ons. Or dsmlink would be a good thing to purchase, with the extra cash.

the 272's are as you said - overkill. If you wanna have this car for the street (which I assume since you are looking for 350 whp) then I would do 264's with a Evo III 16g turbo.
that will compliment some 660 cc injectors.

I know this thread is old but it was never mentioned that it is still not a bad idea to build the block. Just because your goal is not to break 500 hp now doesnt mean you wont want to in the future. Even if you dont change you goal, you will still know you motor is built to take a beating.

It's over a year old and Im sure everything was done and is fine. The only reason you would want to do the internals is if you need a rebuild or a thought of going for more power in the future.

The point is that the money would be better-spent elsewhere if the goal is only 350whp.

I don't see why more boost and more fuel wouldn't have reached his goal with his current mods, anyway. The car is FWD- it's much easier to net higher HP numbers with a FWD because you're turning less driveline parts.

That is true, I was just stating that it isn't a bad idea. My goal is 350 hp AWD but im building the entire motor. But i never know when i will want more, ### u ALWAYS want more LOL. Sooner or later

If you want 350AWHP your gonna be much better off putting your money into a built tranny than a built motor.

keep in mind people have made over 500whp on the stock internals. some 264 cams might be nice.

I am running 264 cams and they are nice;) my dyno! My motto on the internals is you can never overkill:thumb: boltons now that's a different story. Just try and balance everything out if your hp goals are 350whp then get everything that will support that (boltons that is) fuel pump, cams, intake exhaust manifold, turbo, ect! Just my $.02:D

how is a race tranny going to gain him more horsepower??
Wouldn't it just free up lost horsepower the the stock one was holding back... and just cause you peak power to be some where else in the rmp range, rather than a plain GAIN of HP??

If im wrong PLEASE explain?

for serious....

And doesn't shep sell like 1 stage rebuilt trannies for around $1000

If you're on the same budget as the OP(2k) then you aren't going to be able to build a motor etc with that price. Forged internals that is.

A nice 50trim, DSMlink, fmic, 272's and 1000cc's would be a PERFECT awd 350-450ish HP daily driver on stock block and trans etc... It really depends on your driving habits with what and when you break something.

I don't think its possible to go overkill with these cars, you should see what I wanna do when I get my GSX, its absurd. And thats putting it nicely. =P

I would do 272s, upgraded valve springs, freshened head, ARP head studs and stock head gasket, dsm link, larger injectors 1000+ and crank up the boost. Thats all you really need dude. A forged motor will not gain you HP. Its all boost and tune baby!! That above will pull out close to 400HP on the dyno on race gas.
After the above is done look at upgrading your drive train.

Lucky, i have been through 6 used ones and on my second shep tranny LOL.

Jack's Trannsmision FTW :hellyeah:

I do believe you can go overkill with building up an engine. Internals for example. Does the everyday person need Al rods, super heavy duty cranks, billet main caps, oil scrapers, full L19 internal bolts etc. I think you can build above what you need for growing room, but there is a deffinate overkill level that you don't need and is a waste of money.
