Never knew the cars were dubbed H24S either.....

So, here's a few for today, enjoy!

Great Stuff Phil. Like the drawing of the 92' 1G. Looks like we see where they stole the inspiration for the 2G bumper. Oh and the car was not always "codenamed" the H24S! The project only got that after the Mitsubishi provided drivetrain that was commited included a 4-wheel drive version.

Been swamped at the job lately. So could not get any real good stuff loaded or scanned. But will get some good stuff up tomorrow. Finally found one of my missing boxes that had my oldest stuff in it. So here is a quick synopsis of what I reread this evening.

This is from a Japanese newswire(yes, for you young guys thats how we got info back in the day).

The Japan Times Weekly 1984: JAMA(Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association) Statement
"The initial agreement is for Mitsubishi to provide Chrysler with the drivetrain and the U.S.(Chrysler) provide their own modern/sport coupe body. By partnering with Chrysler to assemble the sport coupe in the U.S. using their own resources Mitsubishi can access the mass market. The U.S. current Voluntary Restraint Agreement (VRA) is limiting our(Japan) exports. The agreed to Mitsubishi platform is that of the Mitsubishi Tredia/Cordia."

So there you have it. Our cars basically got made in the states because the US was threatened by the popularity of cheaper/fuel effecient Japanese cars that were being imported. So the Japanese found a way to still get the cars to the American mass market.

A little Galant VR-4 love for today. Gotta show some love considering our T/E/Ls are just reclothed VR-4s(engineering wise).

1. Galant VR-4 Dealer promotion toy from Japan (hence the RHD)
2. R&T Galant VR-4 article Nov '90

That's a great test.....nice photos . That die-cast is awesome!

Glad you like buddy.....that's interesting info you've got there. So cool. It's great to learn so much new stuff. Ok, can't wait to see what you've got coming next! I've got a bit more I can toss up here, but soon, unfortunately, it will all be packed and gone. I think between all of us up here, we can keep this thread cruising for quite some time.......

This next article, "Second invasion" goes along the lines of the Japanese JAMA newswire.

This is one of my earliest Diamond Star references.

Please forgive the quality as it is a copy from Microfiche(I know some of you guys still remember going to the library and using one, as well as the Ditto machine).

Also noteworthy is the second article,"Hush-hush project". It adressess the U.S. automakers growing concern over the increasingly popular inexpensive Japanese cars.

And not to forget those who just want to see some old school DSM goodness in action. I have attached a couple photos of the 12 Hours of Sebring Endurance Race Official Pace Car-Mitsubishi Eclipse.

That is pretty cool! The Sebring stuff is great! I've got several of the programs and the 1990 is one of them.....

Good call on the 1990 Sebring. That is where the two top color photos are from. The black and white photo I am not so sure. The reason being in the black and white photo the Eclipse has a dealer plate on it. Also, I have not seen it, but a buddy of mine told me he saw coverage of the 1990 race and they show the Eclipse Pace car leading the pack. That would be cool to see.

This next article is probably my oldest reference to the "codename" for the 1G. I still have stuff to go through, but think this is it. I dont have the date on the article, but it is near the end of 1986. I still have the original magazines all boxed, just cut out most of my early references.

This article also shows Mitsubishi's commitment to provide the Cordia/Tredia platform as the basis for the H2X as was stated in the 1984 Japanese JAMA statement. A cool thing to note is that the Cordia/Tredia at their peaks in Japan had a 4G63/4WD/Turbo model. I have no idea what was available stateside for these models.

also attaching another photo of the X2S. I saw the car at the LA Auto show during the first week of January 1988. Considering that, the car had to be put together in 86/87 so it probably rode on Cordia platform. As I did read that the Misubishi design studio that came up with the Mitsubishi X2S design was given a rolling chassis.

I know it's not a dsm but the title says 4G63 so here is a vid I just uploaded on the new gvr4 circa 1988. I have a lot of dsm vids to upload from then as well. Stay tuned >>

The Japanese Best Motoring review of the VR-4, great vid. Thank you for uploading.

Finally got some more scanned in. As you can see from some of my previous post our 1G had been in the works since the early 80's. Well in the very beginning the Mitsubishi Car Research & Development Center in Okazaki, Japan gave the U.S. Mitsubishi and Chrysler design studios the task of coming up with a design proposal. Should have been a simple task as the powerplant, drivetrain, chassis and interior were all coming from Mitsubishi. That is why in most circles the 50/50 contribution idea was optimistic. The car is probably at best 25% American.
The Mitsubishi Styling Studio in Cypress, California was led by senior designer David O'Connell.
The Pacifica Design Studio in Carlsbad, California. Specifically, their International Design section. Which reported directly to Chrysler's Design Concept Committee in Highland Park, Mich.

The following piece shows that the Chrysler design went over to Japan for approval in February 1985.

It is also thanks to the Chrysler Pacifica design studios that we got the Galant platform. With the Cordia/Tredia being dated and coming to in end in the market place, the idea of using the Mirage as a platform was being tossed around. Mainly because of the notion of building Mirages at the Normal, DSM plant. So from this point on it is finalized that we get the newly introduced in Japan Galant platform, albeit a little shorter wheel base and no 4-Wheel steering.

The next article is a DSM interview done in Kitsuregawa, Japan with Richard Recchia, VP of Mitsu Motors Sales of America. In the 3rd question he discusses the VRA which limited Japanese imports, but now with the DSM plant the cars are not subject to the VRA because they are made in the US.

The next article is a test drive of the Plymouth X2S which was pretty much a factory produced piece, unlike the Mitsubishi X2S. So aside from the body bits below the rubber molding and the 225/50/16 rubber the car is a Laser. This car also had boost at 13Psi.
Another funny note is that even though the Laser name had been finalized by this point, the Mitsubishi name had not. In the article the Mitsubishi car is called the "Tigra".

Cool thing about that last article about the Laser was it had 8.5:1 compression and it had less torque and yet peak power was more but 500 rpm sooner.

Here is few old photos showing some DSM cosmetic stuff from back in the day.
1Ga Nose Mask(Bra) with installation instructions and Pop-up light covers.
In the pictures he has the nose mask and the rear roof spoiler(sunshade basically) and the GTS headlight covers.

Able to do some more scanning.

This article is from June 1992.
The Talon belongs to Executive Publisher, Leonard Emanuelson of Car Craft magazine.

Funny how Car Craft was always associated with Musclecars and the Publisher owns a Talon.

Good seldom seen 1G Project car write-up. The car was running 13's by early '92.

Utilizing mainly all HKS Parts and Tuning by Archer Racing.

In the article they talk about how the Archers dominated with the AWD Turbo Talons in 1989, so AWD got banned. Then they dominated in 1990 with the FWD turbos, so the Turbo got banned. Then in 1991 they dominated and won with the FWD N/A Talon! No stopping the Archer Talons.

I don't have any more articles on this Project car, so I don't know how it ended.

Killer stuff Jose! And, the story of the Archer brothers SCCA team from 1989-1996 is amazing. Paul Rossi's IMSA story is HUGE, relative to the Talons it almost matches the Archers' SCCA story. There was no stopping the Talons in roadrace competition. Wolin's Eclipses did pretty well too. There were also some wins by some independent guys in DSMs that were noteworthy. I've got quite a bit of stuff that is Archer Racing related to post......as soon as I can, I will. Here's another Sebring shot.....

......and a cool shot of a DSM road racer!

....and the last two pics I found in my searches.....some killer looking white Talon....wonder who it is? Great shots Jose!

Thanks Phil. Yup a couple of shots of my road racer. Have not done a single thing to the car since those photos were taken 8 or 9 years ago. Will get it to the track in '12 for sure though.

Looking forward to what you have on Rossi. I just have pics, no articles, no point spreads or anything pertaining to him or his team.

Scanned some more. This article is from Dec, 1988.

It is a decent DSM Preview article. Brings up a couple good notables.
1. A built functioning model was ran 135mph at the Mitsubishi Kitsuregawa Test Course, in Nagoya Japan.
2. Interior, Engine, drivetrain and chassis are all Mitsubishi contributions.
3. Chrysler's Pacific studio clay model accepted as the basis for the 1Gs
4. Chrysler's Pacific studio pushed for the Galant platform.
5. Base model DSM has a .29 drag coeffient. The lowest of any production car at the time.
6. Still debating whether to add the Galant's 4-wheel steering.
7. Eagle Talon name finalized
8. They want to use the DSM plant to make the Mirage and Colt.

Cool thread for sure. I have about a dozen or so magazines in total I have collected. Maybe 4 or 5 from 1988-1990 previewing the DSMs, and the rest are brochures. I also have a VHS video, which is instructional for the Mitsu techs. Its basically introducing the drivetrain on the cars.

The rarest thing I have is a dinner plate from the grand opening dinner held November 10, 1988. I sent it out to some of the most well known DSMers and had it signed.

Nick,
That is great. That is exactly the kind of stuff I look forward to seeing. Rare piece for sure. I recognize alot of the people you had sign.

Welcome! It will be awesome to see the car hit the tracks this year for sure! Can't say the same for me....not sure if I'll be out this year. I'm in the middle of a pretty big build with my Talon. Definitely a great article here. I'll have to check if I've got the magazine. I have alot of stuff in my binders that I've pulled from magazines, however, mint examples(for instance magazines with no address labels printed on) I've left intact. Figured I'd find another someday and pull the article from there. All my magazines are packed away, so it will be a while. As far as Rossi goes, I do have quite a bit of info, probably not quite as much as Archer stuff, but a fair amount. I'll post up some teasers later....then I'll be pretty much tapped out until our move is complete.

That is sick........JP90Talon one of the most well known DSMrs?! Haha.....he's local to me and I haven't talked to him in years......crazy to see him on your plate.

I remember that bang for the buck article! I actually had that magazine. must have read it a hundred times... I dreamt of one day owning a cool car....At the time I drove a very first generation audi 5000 turbo! yes,,, it was a very cool car,, and I would love to have another. However,, those cars in the magazine...They were the greener grass,, the next step up in cool. Only people who had them were adult types with real jobs. My silly teen age life could only afford that audi. Those were the days.
