Where'd everyone go? It's a ghostown in here and the thread is getting buried into the second page:confused:

My bad Phil. I have been conducting a two week long Self Inspection here at the job and have family in town. So no time for the thread.

But here are a couple old interesting articles I have that are now digitized. I know you like all this oddball stuff also. Almost like a Trivial Pursuit-DSM Edition.

They all concern then Illinois Gov. James R. Thompson( who is also the longest-serving governor in Illinois history). Who supposedly got the first production Eclipse(red) and first Laser(black). The Company donated the Eclipse to the governor's office and the state. Then Gov. Thompson bought the Laser for his wife.

These two cars are considered JOB #1: There are also displayed in the photo below from the opening Ceremony.
September 1988 Product launch of the first two commercial cars (Job 1) – Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe and Plymouth Laser coupe Ref: DSM History MMNA

for lack of time I will just past it all here. Sorry for the poor organization of the post.

The first car to roll off the line at the plant was a shiny red 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse, which was given to then-Gov. Jim Thompson, who helped bring the factory to the Twin Cities.

State's garage offers glimpse at changes
By KURT ERICKSON Herald Review

More than two decades ago, then-Gov. James R. Thompson took delivery of a shiny red Mitsubishi Eclipse, fresh off the assembly line at the new Diamond-Star Motors factory that he'd helped lure to Illinois.
The vehicle was a gift from the company, which had located its first and only U.S. production plant in the cornfields west of Bloomington-Normal. When Thompson got the Eclipse, he took and passed his first driving test in more than a decade while sitting in its driver's seat.

****************************
Thompson bought the first Plymouth Laser off the line for his wife, Jayne, and Mitsubishi insisted on providing the governor`s office with a fully loaded Eclipse.
Meanwhile, steer clear of the roads into Cheeseland on or about July 1. That`ll be Jayne darting northward in the Laser with the governor`s Eclipse in pursuit. If he can find fifth gear, Thompson might return for a fifth campaign.

BUSINESS
2 Million Served Up At Mitsubishi Plant
By Jim Mateja, Tribune Auto Writer | February 5, 2001
Jim Thompson got the first one built in 1988. Who gets the 2 millionth one built last week depends on the luck of the draw. In 1985, then Illinois Gov. Jim Thompson sold Mitsubishi on building an assembly plant in downstate Normal. Honda was building cars in the U.S. in response to then Chrysler Corp. Chairman Lee Iacocca's urging that, "If you want to sell here, you should build here." With the value of the Japanese yen fluctuating against the U.S. dollar, forcing the Japanese to raise prices on imports to take currency valuations into account, a U.S. plant made sense.

The Diamond-Star Motors Corp. plant here...
CHRYSLER PLANT.November 11, 1988
NORMAL, ILL. — CHRYSLER PLANT. The Diamond-Star Motors Corp. plant here ushers in a new era for the U.S. auto industry, Chrysler Motors Corp. Chairman Lee Iacocca said Thursday during opening ceremonies. The plant, dubbed the ''world's greatest'' by Iacocca, is expected to employ 2,900 people and produce 240,000 cars a year. About 2,000 dignitaries, dealers and factory workers cheered. Gov. James Thompson also attended. Trumpets sounded as Iacocca rode on stage in a black turbo-charged Plymouth Laser while Mistubishi Chairman Toyoo Tate rode in a red Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Governor Again Going To Far East
By Daniel Egler, Chicago Tribune | October 17, 1985
Continuing his pledge to visit the Far East four times a year, Gov. James Thompson will leave for Japan and South Korea next month to lead a trade mission of about 100 Illinois exporters, legislators, local officials and experts in economic development. Though the governor has been criticized for his frequent travels to Europe and Asia, Thompson told reporters that his foreign trips have produced about 5,000 jobs and $925 million in investments in the state economy. In addition to the decision by Diamond-Star Motors Corp.

Another quick one for the thread.

A pin from the 1995 Frankfurt International Motorshow.

In German-Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung(IAA). Translation - International Automobile Exhibition.

This was the European debut of the 2G Eclipse.

The Blue car on the left is the Mitsubishi Carisma.
I am also attaching a photo of the prototype German Supertouring Carisma from the 1995 Frankfurt Show.

Super Touring Era is my all time favorite. I almost pulled the trigger on an Accord on ebay last year, but it wasn't a Euro spec car so I decided against it. It was a 94-97 American Body. If I could find Randy Pobst's or Cunningham's NATCC Super Touring Accords I would bid.....

...as always, awesome, the Charisma ST is sick....

Just some DSM souvenirs I have come across over the years.

All sick stuff....you have alot!

Hey ArcticTsi back on your post from 12/11/2011 with all those rally pics of dsms where did you come across those?

Sorry, dont know were I got some of those from. I had them on one of my old hard-drives. Some I got from Comic Ozzie's old portfolio website. He has been in the autophotography game for a while.

That banner is super cool. The buckle is wild. Is there any markings on the reverse side?

I always thought the super tourers were really cool. If I remember a requirement for a while was they all had the run 19" wheels and use the same Michelin rubber.

Couple old photos of my car from 93 & 94.
First one I believe I was already at "Stage 2" HKS trim. Still original tires too.

Second, was the addition of some Intrax springs.

Third, was my first audio upgrade. Pair of Sony 12's. Guys with the AWD can appreciate how crazy it was to fit a box with 12's and still have the cargo cover close.

Yes, Super Touring along with BTCC cars of that era wore narrow 19" wheels(no widening of factory sheetmetal was allowed) and ran the same tire.

Cool pics of your Talon way back. When I first got into this I wanted a white/white one like yours. Probably my favorite DSM in stock trim, next would be the red.

Killer subs, but damn, talk about adding weight! For several years I had a 10" MTX Blue thunder in a band-pass in the Talon.....lots of noise for a small cabin!

Yup the weight was significant. Needless to say my "Boomin'" system days were short lived. When I started getting more serious about performance that was the first thing to go. Crazy you mention the MTX Blue Thunder's. I have one sitting in my garage to this day. As well as a MTX Blue Thunder Pro150 amp. Circuit City was having a sale way back when for the set so I snagged them. I am actually going to put them in my DD, which has a factory 10" sub which needs replacing.

Couple more old magazine clippings I just scanned for the thread.

1.Old Extreme ad when they were the Fastest/Quickest DSM
2. Old article with Glazar, Culotta, Shepherd and Hallman duking it out.
3. Pacific's Fast Glass ad(same guys who made the kit for the Championship ed. Talon)

*Edit* just scanned one more.
Shepherd winning the DSM Star Class. Amazing to See a 12.8 pass win it all for the DSMs

hehe....yeah I remember people dynomatting their interiors while I was heating up and removing all my interior sound deadening...LOL!

Blue Thunder subs are killer. I still have my MTX Thunder 240 amp, crossover, and some MTX separtes......oh and a huge box like you had, but for Boston Pro 12's that I never used!

That Clutch Masters ad pic was take at Atco...I was there that day....I have one of Culotta's timeslips from that day that I'll post up once I'm unpacked. Culotta was one of the coolest cats out there in the DSM world. Do you remember his white/purple TSi FWD? Goin waaaay back....

Yeah, my hood I'm pretty sure was from Pacific...If you look back when you posted up the Top 10 fastest DSM's, Dan Kraft, 10.7 sec FWD Talon...that's my hood now........the DSM world of hand me down.....:D

Thanks! No markings at all on the back of the buckle at all surprisingly.

Below is Nate Pharr's Galant, at the time the fastest Galant VR-4 in the country. This car is now at JNZ Tuning for a little freshening and modernizing.

A blurb about Eagle Talons kicking azz and taking names....Archers and PRR.....

...and to change it up a bit.....a couple from my old Car & Driver desktop calendar...

....and some shots of a local survivor.....'90 Laser RS Turbo, 116k original miles, one owner. I offered this guy cash, fair offers on several occasions and he declined and would not come $100 off the asking price of $3500. In hindsight, I should have snagged it....oh well!

Awesome our community is so tight that we can pass things on like that. Not like some other groups which are like, if I cant use it anymore, no one will.

Great article. I remember seeing this car frequently. DSS ad very nice too.

Great photos. Love the one of the Talon in the pits, refueling and a tire change looks like. The body on the 90 laser looked mint. Tolerances still looked good.

Couple quick ones for today.
I had put up how the design houses were competing for which design would get selected as the final design for the 1G. Here is a small blurp about how long ago their design was submitted and one of the original water colors that was put out by the winning studio(Pacifica-Chryslers div.)

The pic of the Rossi car in the "pits" is them competing, and going on to win, a pitstop competition.....really cool.

I remember seeing that watercolor and the small article. I must have that magazine packed away. The watercolor is pretty awesome, love the rear valance and what appear to be about 19" wheels.

Yeah, that '90 Laser was straight...and pulled strong as any. All it needed was a windshield and a serious detail and that car was a conversation piece. I had a champagne '90 that was the same. Wish I never sold it. I'll dig up a pic once we're moved in. I don't have any digital.

Just found this thread. Great stuff. I have a few things I'll post up in the next week or so.

Great! Glad to see you here!

Another survivor....Cali car. Sold on ebay for $5,300. Enjoy!

I remember that old HKS ad from Turbo Magazine and the "Tallon" from Autoweek. Funny stuff!

Here's another survivor, a super survivor actually, pretty sure I found it on Autotrader.com and if I remember corrctly they were asking $7,995. It's an A/T with 8844 original miles.....incredible if you ask me:

The "TALLON" is most certainly a Triumph TR7 or TR8 Fixed Head Coupe. Probably the only reason I know is that I have a TR8 Drop Head Coupe.

Yeah, that's pretty obvious....I liked that car when I was a kid...Hope you're planning a 4G63 swap, as anyone who's into cars knows the Brits can't build an engine worth a crap and their electronics and wiring must come out of WWII era transistor radios......ROFL

Got this picture from my shop's part store....dont know why they had it but its mine now! HA HA

Phil, I figured most of the youngsters would only know about Triumph bikes. Since you are over 30 like me, I figure we are in the minority of knowing what a TR7 is.
No 4G swap in mine, I will leave that to Leon. It is a TR8 so it has the Rover Group revised all aluminum Buick 215 V8 in it.

We have freshened in out the the last couple years, with a 4 barrel carb, more aggressive cam, Mallory coil, headers, dual exhaust, A/C delete, Willwood 4 piston front brake, 15" Panasports etc... IT has been pretty damn reliable in a the 2-3000 miles we put on it is a year. Probably going to keep it a 3.5, but it is also tempting to punch out the displacement on those things.

Hey, hey now....who says I'm over 30?

That's cool...I wouldn't have pegged your "other" auto interests with Triumph, that's all. No disrespect, I'm sure it's a fun car to toy around with.....
