I bought one of these larger die cast eclipses off ebay a LONG LONG time ago. I think I paid $60 or so shipped. Had no idea how epic of a purchase it would turn out to be, nor would I have any clue that I would be so involved in these cars a full 16 or more years after I first caught wind of them. I LOVE seeing all the old advertisements etc, I wish I had kept some of the things I've had that are fairly rare. I have a old talon key ring, that eclipse in the box, and a handful of advertisements.

Thanks so much for the thread!

I'd be really interested in seeing that pic. That grey Talon was incredibly clean, and I agree with you on the wheels. They were anodized black if I recall correctly, and it was a poor job. Those are just not meant to be a black wheel.

I haven't actually met Adam (archTSI) but he's a friend of a friend. I didn't realize the Archers were that big among the DSM community. I guess I'll have to run up and check it out sometime. I know they build Vipers now, however.

Ok, I will find it, it's a paper pic, not digi, so unfortunately it is packed away right now. If I can find my boxes of photo albums I'll get it up asap. Otherwise it will be a few months. Yeah, The Archers were huge. Road Racing DSMS came quite a bit before the Drag Racing end of things that centered alot of the attention on the DSMs.

The Archer Team were first to race a DSM, Talon, in April of 1989, several months before the car was available to the general public. The first race the car saw was an SCCA Pro Racing Event held at Sears Point Raceway, in Sonoma, CA. Currently known as Infineon. The Archer Brothers were leading the race when a brake line worked loose and was severed. They would have won with ease.

Jose! Found this eclipse drawing searching around last night! Pretty cool!

That one is cool. I had not seen that. Here is some video from The 28th Tokyo Motor Show where the Eclipse debut took place. Notables in the vid are as follows:
1:33 - HSR II (High Speed Research Vehicle V6 based, original Galant HSR was 4G63 powered)

2:00 - Galant VR-4 Rally Car

2:15 - 4G63 Cyclone motor working cutaway

2:43 - Galant AMG (4G63NA)

3:16 - Eclipse GSR-4

alot of other cool stuff in there also.

28th Tokyo Motor Show - 1989

From BleedingSilver:

That is awesome. Never knew about that Pepsi Contest. Great commercial.

Here is a scan of the inside of the handout for the Mitsubishi X2S Roadster concept that debuted at the LA Auto Show.

In the handout they refer to a HSR vehicle that used the 4G63 motor to achieve 200mph. The vehicle they are talking about is the High Speed Research Galant. I have a photo of it somewhere(found it, attached below). Not to be confused with the HSR II which was V6 based.

Wow, $60.00! I wish!

Glad you're liking this thread.....toss a pic of your talon keyring up!

From BleedingSilver:

I think that's the coolest Talon commercial yet, good find!

Glad you like! Awesome stuff here...the vid is unreal! I actually like the HSR Galant alot better than the HSR II. It's a machine well before it's time. I'd love to know how much power it took out of the 4G63 to get that car to 200 mph. I bet it's less than we think with that aero.....

And now, a contribution for today based on some recent discussion:

My favorite rally pic, Archer's 2G "Show" Racer, the Archer 2G in action, and The Spirit of Daytona Eclipse at the Rolex 24 hour race in 1999(might be '98.):

So, there's some 2G love today....

The two Archer shots showed up in my email one morning. Over the years I've come in contact with alot of people in my search for DSM memorabilia. So, I actually have a few "scouts" out there and as they find things they send em my way.....so, we all benefit!

What I have to share next is more 4G63 and entertainment related. Not too many of the under 30 crowd probably remember or know about the movie "Cannonball Run II" from 1984. I remember watching the movie at the drive-in-theater, while sitting in the hatch of my parent's Chevette. There is a quirky black Mitsubishi Starion in the movie, with a crew consisting of "Jaws" from the James Bond movies and Jackie Chan.

I also found a old Mitsubishi commercial that is based on their awesome turbocharged platforms.

I have the Cannonball movies on VHS. The guys in the Starion were hilarious!

Since we are posting Rally pics... I posted these on another thread but I'll link them over here:

1999 Mitsubishi GT3 Eclipse GSX Project Spec Sheet

You must be logged in to view this image or video.

It's the same number and the headlights in your photo look like 2gb ones.

Good catch...I'm mixing it up with the 1GB they ran. However, your picture is definitely a different set of graphics than what the car has on in my pic.

Also, some of the info on their spec sheet is way wrong. I'll have to check my stuff, but Willy Lewis did not win the championship in 94, '95, and '96. Archer Racing did not win the championship in 1996. They were second and fourth and if I remember correctly, Willy didn't even run in 1996. So, this car might have won in '94 or '95. So, one year at the most. Still cool, but the car has been taken so far from it's original state none of that means too much anymore.

Ok, I had to go figure this out real quick. The first Eclipse that ran was a 1GB in 1995 in the GTU class at the Rolex 24. They started 74th and finished 24th. Then they raced the 2G Archer car which is a 2GA in 1998 & 1999 in the GT2 class and finished top 20.

http://www.grand-am.com/news/index.cfm?series=k&cid=7601

"The Spirit of Daytona has a Rolex 24 history stretching back to 1994, when a group of friends worked on a low-budget car in a house garage.

From those humble beginnings, team owner/manager Troy Flis has built a full-service race shop in Holly Hill.

Flis is the heart and soul of the Spirit team. He's been there from the start, when friends and family entered an under-powered Mitsubishi Eclipse in the race in 1994. His father, Stan, was the crew chief."

That should about sum it up.

That rally picture is sweet. The Rolex 24 hour eclipse is great. Love the additional lighting on the bumper. Its cool to see they recognized the inferior light capabilities even when the cars were new.

Couple more things from the Mitsubishi X2S debut in LA. Couple scans from the original auto show program. It would be awesome to find a color version of the concept drawing. Also a couple scans of the inside of the X2S handout from the auto show.
