hi im new here and ive been researching this for the last couple hours. i just bought a 97 eclipse today and the guy told me it leaks oil into the air intake and then leaks out of the air filter. ive been into toyotas and the off road scene for the last couple of years and thought i knew what i was doing.

well ive been driving the car around and it dont really smoke at idle or normal driving but when i get on it it smokes worse than a train. i think that the oil is getting in the intake and then getting burnt but i really have no idea on how to fix the problem. i dont think that the car has a turbo but i really dont know

i was hoping to fix the car tomorrow but i was wondering what you guys thought about it. any help would be amazing.

sounds like you have some blown piston rings.

the oil is getting through the breather tube from the valve cover to the air intake piping if you dont wanna replace the rings, a band aid would be to put and air breather on the in take so that oil isnt getting to the air intake. But it doesnt fix the actual issue with smoking in all. just oil in the air filter.
if the car is a gst its turbo.

dang. thats kind of what i was afraid of. i thought this was a good deal but maybe not.

has anybody ever heard of marvel mystery oil?? do you think that would help the problem any?

Marvel is great I use it on lots of stuff. But the bottle doesnt say will fix anything. Marvel is an additive to oil thats all. They do make "Crap" that says it fixes leaks and bad rings at autozone but if its bad I dont think any promise ina bottle is worth the risk.

99 Could be correct but I would also do what attack was saying and check the turbo. The turbo could have a bad gasket and be blowing oil into the intake. When you check a lille light film is ok but if it looks like theres alot pull the *im assuming you have a stock sidemount* intercooler and tun the tube to the ground and empty it. If thats your problem they sell rebuild kits online, Or you can have it rebuilt by another dsm'er or a shop. Leme know what you find!

well i was looking at it and theres a tube that goes from the valve cover and to the air intake. i could just be silly but i think that is where it is coming in. another thing is its not coming in slowly, its like pouring in.

So your thinking it's coming from the valve cover and not the turbo..

I would still check the turbo for shaft play..Which would mean it's blowing oil from the turbo into the intake tube..And the Intercooler is probably also filling with oil..It's not hard to take it off and clean it when you do get everything fixed..Hopefully it's just the turbo..

Rebuilding a turbo is easy, rebuilding an egine is not so easy. There is supposed to be some oil in your intake lines but if it's comming out of the air filter your turbo seals are probably shot, especially if it's smoking worse then a train under boost. What color is the smoke? Can you have someone drive behind you to see. Check these guys out Midwest Turbo Connection Turbo Rebuild Kits for all makes and models They have rebuild kit's for a T-25 for pretty cheap and you can get your turbine shaft balanced as well for a reasonable price.

And you could maybe try replacing the PCV valve to see if that helps but I am pretty sure your turbo needs a rebuild. I have also seen a few 14bs going for around a $100 in good shape lately.

yea thats kind of what im thinking it is. i thought that maybe there is a stuck piston ring or something. i know my 4 wheeler did basically the same thing but it never leaked out of the air filter so thats what is totally messing with me right now. i was hoping i could figure out the problem today and get it fixed so i can start driving it.

To rule it out then..You need to pull the intake pipe off and check the turbo for shaft play..

Also some maintenance goes a long way..PCV valve is only about 6 bucks, and should be replaced..

The only way this could be the problem is if you have a bad PCV valve (get a new oem one) or you have horrible blow by and your pistons are shot. Like I alread said it is more then likely the turbo on it's way out.

There is a small thing on the valve cover this could be coming from. Remove the valve cover and check the bottom to make sure the baffle plates are there. That plate is to stop mass oil from getting to those breathers and to only let the air in the engine be ventilated. No plate means pure thick oil getting into them.

Disconnect your intake pipe, and your lower ic pipe to get an idea of what you're looking at. Sounds like a quart of oil sloshing around. If so it's likely your ic is loaded up, too.

This is also good advice. You need to not speculate as to what you think is happening and actually pull some pieces off and find where the mass oil is entering and then we trace that and find the true culprit.

i just bought a new pcv valve so ill put that on and then im going to start taking stuff apart to see where it is coming from. it couldnt be the rings sticking or anything because from what ive seen on other vehicles that wouldnt make oil come out of the air filter. just in case though i got some sea foam. thanks for the help everybody. ill get to work on it here soon and let you know what i find.

ok so i got in there and took off the valve cover and everything looks good. i changed out the pcv valve and the old one i could blow through both ways. i put the new one on and now the car doesnt smoke all the time but it still does it. the car boggs down and smoke for a few seconds and then goes away for a few minutes. im going to run sea foam through it but im worried that the engine just needs rebuilt........

any help would be awesome. thanks in advance

also are there any other ways to fix crankcase pressure? and any ways to easily see if there is a lot of pressure? would a pressure gauge help any?

If your PCV was bad, Then you need to clean all the intake tubing, Your Entercooler should be full of OIL, take it off the clean it.
If you don't clean all the intake, then your car wont stop smoking, Until all the oil gets sucks into the engine.

Just make a good clean up, and your problem should be solved.

After that, you can add a catch can to prevent from oil going into your intake again.

Everybody keeps mentioning the turbo, and intercooler. But the OP isn't even sure if he has a 4G63. That could change diagnosis completely. Pat97eclipse, do you mind taking a picture of your engine bay for us to identify if its a 4G63 or 420a?

Good point.

Dammmmm... I have been reading this thread for a couple of days, and till now I have thinking on that...

Some times we get focus on the issue and forget about what kind of engine is it.

:ohdamn:
