oil leak out of air filter

hi im new here and ive been researching this for the last couple hours. i just bought a 97 eclipse today and the guy told me it leaks oil into the air intake and then leaks out of the air filter. ive been into toyotas and the off road scene for the last couple of years and thought i knew what i was doing.

well ive been driving the car around and it dont really smoke at idle or normal driving but when i get on it it smokes worse than a train. i think that the oil is getting in the intake and then getting burnt but i really have no idea on how to fix the problem. i dont think that the car has a turbo but i really dont know

i was hoping to fix the car tomorrow but i was wondering what you guys thought about it. any help would be amazing.

i would throw my 2 cents in...but nothing is adding up....

po has yet to admit to it either being turbo or not...yet his car status is telling us non turbo...this telling me it is a 420a motor....

if it smokes at idle....chances are its your rings

if it is only smoking on start up and anytime you are hitting the throttle its valve stem seals...

but your description is telling me the rings are shot.....a compression test would tell us exactly what is going on.....

ok sorry guys. the engine a 420a, i should have mentioned that in the beginning. it seems to be doing better now though. it doesnt smoke nearly as much, i havent ran it hard though. i put some sea foam in the oil and the vacuum line trick. it seems to be doing better and better each time and the oil leak out of the filter is smaller. im thinking the rings are going out.

haha yea my bad. i guess from now on i will start sayin that stuff from the beginning.

well i put the car up for sale because i dont know if i want to be messing with this kind of stuff all the time. im a toyota 22re guy at heart.

but anyways ive been doing some research and the car is doing better now but i think that i need to replace valve seals and valve cover gaskets. this car has been a lot more work than i was thinking it would be.

It's a 14-15 year old car. Did you expect much less? A little TLC is not a lot of work to bring a nice car back to life.

yea i know but its hard to do a little tlc when it needs a makeover. i cant even drive the car but it is leaking so bad. ive gone through almost 5 quarts just getting it licensed and going to the store and home. whoever had this before didnt know the term "maintenance"

Haha, these aren't 22r engines. You can't just weld the hood shut and go on about your merry way. Glad you figured it out.

Make sure you change the oil soon if you added seafoam to the engine oil. After about 200 miles that stuff is going nasty as hell.

My buddy had a mini filter on the valve cover breather and it leak oil and he had to clean it alot. I put one on my car and its been fine so im really guessing that you have some oil coming out of the valve cover through the breather hose and into your intake and out the filter.
